Portrayal of Spaniards in 'Lost Cities of the Amazon'

Once again, it seems they can't get Spaniards right in American TV or movies. I thought that National Geographic would be a bit more accurate with this stuff. Unfortunately it is not the case. It's ridiculous.

In the episode "Lost Cities of the Amazon", they reenact the discovery of Cpt. Orellana and other Spanish explorers of the lost city of "El Dorado" and the native Amazonian tribes.

What's puzzling is that the Spaniards are portrayed by what seems to be Mexican actors, mostly mestizos. As portrayed in this documentary, the so-called Spaniards and the Amazonian natives seem to be from the same race. It is ridiculous.

Why is it so difficult to just get caucasians to portray the Spaniards?
Why is it so difficult to American production houses to understand Spain is a country in Europe, not some province in Mexico?
So they even have historical consultants for a National Geographic show?

or Penelope Cruz? How about British actor of Italian/Spanish descent Alfred Molina playing Diego Rivera?

Get over it.

Mexicans can be white & Alfred Molina has a Med. look. Anyway, I think the OP's point is valid, because a lot of people are confused about what a person is when they are Hispanic.

From what I learned in my classes for counseling Mexicans are considered Caucasian because most of their ancestors came from Europe such as Spain, Italy, France, and the British Isles. They usually vehemently deny this and say they are Mexican as if it was a separate race. The only true separate race would be if they have Native American in them which is a separate race. Unfortunately these days people with Latino last names refuse to accept their European roots and there are other people in the world who have the same names. THose would be the Philipinos. They were controlled by Spain for close to if not more than 400 years. They are Asian, again a separate race.As to the "Hispanic" look everyone in the known world emigrated to the New World and as a result the gamut of looks runs from blonde to black hair, very light to very dark skin, and all heights and facial features. When George Takei picked strawberries as a teen the owners of the field who were Japanese assumed he was Mexican since there are some in Mexico who look Japanese. He told this story in his autobiography.
