Too short...could have been so much better...

I truly believe that this could have been so much more than it was. It had a promising plot (the little that it did go into that is), and there was something to that art style used that I also enjoyed. The whole pale plate show casing the mood of the period as well as characters only to be wonderfully broken through out with those bright blood streaks, very lovely. I don’t know it’s just those images of the blood when placed against the almost washed out watercolor on the faintly drawn scenes was just really nice to me….AND then it stopped. Why did it stop…well this damn Anime’s running time is 45minutes that’s why!

This damn thing really should have been longer!

Number one as far as the plot…too little! You are thrown in and that’s it. The ending (“resolution”) also just thrown in. It’s like “Ouch he is stabbed”….girl comes in running…”Oh no he is dead”….and then they roll credits.

Number two you barely get to know the characters… most are just there…either getting there arm’s hacked off or getting knocked off of their horses only to have them get their feet and necks hacked off. You learn like one or two things about the main character and her Lord Raiko and then nothing about anybody else…other than they bleed a lot.

You know I could go on but why the hell bother.
Nice art and color, nice fights, nice use of blood...but over all a disappointment due to it’s length…
JUST TOO DAMN SHORT…really could have been so much more.

first of sorrry for posting like 3 months after you posted that.
Secondly, I agree with you BUT having seen, and learnt about, another film made by the same team 'Blood the Last Vampire', i can see why it is like it is.
What this team seems to ADORE doing, if Blood and this are anything to go by, is give us just a snippet of life.
As in we've just stumbled in on these characters from the blue, we see just a segment of their life and it's left up to us to fill in the blanks. However I was still bloody pissed off when it just suddenly finished just as I was really getting into it...

It's like, oh this is good, enjoyable. Then BAM that last 10 minutes hit's you, sweeps you off your feet, then just...stops. Ends. "That's all your getting, now go away".
Made all the more irritating by the fact that on the back of the bloody DVD box it ACTUALLY says "running time: 80 minutes", but it was all lies...

But yeah, worth watching for the beautiful artwork (minus that goddamn scene they play every 2 minutes, the badly CGI'd one...you'll know it if you've seen it) and once you get your head around the characters and everything it manages to draw you in. Hopefully the next film they do won't leave you wanting to throw your TV out the window, but yeah I did LOVE that last 10 minutes or so, just awesome - even if I didnt know exactly what the hell was going on, still pretty powerful.

And THIRDLY, That's one hell of a kick-ass name Dragon-San, no one seems to understand in the western world noble dragons do exist...not like they ACTUALLY go for beautiful blonde virgin women and burn villagers, I've found an equal amount of ones that 'bat for the other team'...but do they ever get virgin men? No! just damn discrimination on near every level >_> I mean even the straight one's I'm sure would rather stick to their own species, unless your talking about eating, in which case virgins are always thin and bony so useless there too! Not to mention there's plenty of better tasting things out there, like cows and such. No wonder we never see any anymore.

a year later, another one posted

i agree as well- it was way too short. I did not know what was going on and when it was over I was like- what just happen?

The worst part was that it sucked me in- it interest me. You would after making an anime that got people interested from the get go would put more substance into it.

in my opinion, we did not see OAV, we saw an hour long spoiler filled preview/ trailer.

It's not even an hour long, it's 40 minutes >_>

But yeah, exactly the same here - it gets to the point where you're really drawn in, you don't want it to end, then BAM, it's all over.

But then they did kinda finish off most of the strands, so nothing was really left hanging...I just wish there'd been more fleshing out.

yeah, like explaining what happened. Why did the girl pretend to be a boy for so long? What was the uncle's problem and where was he now? And what about the other girl that was childhood sweethearts? You see a clip of her as a child, then she doing a black magic with no reason other than making people really unhappy?
what was going on?

reply

Well I think she pretended to be a boy so she could recieve training maybe? And she wouldn't be looked down/stopped from fighting or engaging in combat for being female.

And you mean the 'evil' empress lady? I'm pretty sure she gives a reason at the end for it, like feeling bitter about being rejected or something? I forget...not watched it in a while >_<
