Ive never been to Sweden so far, but...

Well, this is something new to me.

I always expected Sweden to be a place full o blonde people, hot girls that look like vikings, where it snows al the time...

It was an interesting view. There is only one blonde person in the whole film. The girl at the end. The main character has got brown hair, although a little bit light. Most guys and girls hav brown eyes in the film! And I saw loads of pople with T-shirts, something that freezes my heart to death, in a cold country like(I imagined) Sweden! Where is the cold-weather gear that I thought all swedish guys had to wear all the time???

Maybe I hav to travel more around northern Europe, dont u agree, folks?

I thought the film is cool, but I also reckon that it is too over the top on drugs. Is drug abusing so common in Sweden? What do u all think about that???

reply

I am Swedish and I know that there are people from other countries who think that Sweden is a very cold country where it snows all the time, but in fact, we have really warm weather during the summer.

All people are not blond, blue-eyed and tall, there are actually dark-haired Swedes as well. We look just like people do in America or Britain, for example.

It's really good that other people learn this.

You seem to be really surprised :)

Yes, I really think that you should visit the northern parts of Europe and se th beautiful Nordic countries, each country has their specialties.

It's really flattering that you wanna know more about our country.

reply

Good to get this informative respons from Sweden. But the fact the swede forgot to mention about them, but most of you guys probarbly understood is, that they lack a sense of humour...

reply

We do? I didn't know that, that's why I didn't write that.

Chandler: "You obviously haven't tasted my Palmolive potatoes".

reply

I can't speak for every swede, but I certainly lack a sense of humour.

reply

Swedes have a great sense of humor! So do we here in Norway. It's usually a bit cold in Scandinavia (ie Sweden, Norway, Finland etc) in the winter, but in the summer it gets pretty hot (up to 30 degrees celcius).

Yeah, you guys should travel to Scandinavia some times to see that we're not hunting polar bears in the streets, we do not wear viking outfits and we do have a sense of humor ;)

reply

Tack! I couldn't have said it better myself. And yes, here in Scandinavia we have a great sense of humour, it's just that people from other parts of the world don't really understand it.

Well, I for one thoroughly enjoy a good slapstick-movety-picture from time to time, Nils Poppe anyone? But yeah, Chevy Chase can be a bit much.

However, I don't agree with Apestrife, we have loads of crappy humour (ie pretty much all but the Killing-gänget (pronounced Shilling) and the Fares-movies)

I'm not going to get into what "we Swedes" like, because naturally I don't want to be categorized (read: not mixed up with Swetards (just came up with that)).

I (I'm Swede) for one like British humour (The Office, Garth Marenghi, Nathan Barley, Brass Eye, League of Gentlemen, and of course the good old Python), Asian action and horror (and yeah, US of A makes some good big productions too), and general international indiepics.

Sweden has a history of making extremely craptacular movies, like all Beck-movies, and every last sh*tty action movie we produce.
The upside is that we have (since 2K) had a wave of new movies, not trying to translate American action/cop dramas into Swedish which yields pathetic results, again, Beck-movies and all of the like.

This new wave takes the essence of interesting action, and adapts it to our culture and environment instead of just trying to dub it.
Pulp Fiction -> Smala Sussie and I'm sure you can come up with others.

I haven't seen this particular one yet, but I'm guessing it goes under said genre.

Ok, I'm off to order a pizza and study some linear algebra..... *hrrm* I mean, send this message with the telegraph and go out of my igloo and slay a polar bear with my spear, after which I'll roast it over an open fire and eat it with my hands.

=== End of rant ===

That is all, proceed.

They think that Sweden is like an Ingmar bergman movie! The fact is that most people in Sweden haven't seen much Bergman movies, and if they have seen a little, they dont like it.

reply

Wrong! I've seen a bunch of Bergman movies and I liked all of them. And guess what, I've got a good sense of humour, too. ;)

Storm was suprisingly good, by the way.

reply

Ok, maybe I took it a bit far. But i dont think that more than 10% of the Swedes would say - Yes I have seen a lot of Bergman films, they were great!
I didn't mean all Swedes, but a big majority!

I think that the big majority of the americans believe that all Bergman films are just dark and depressing. But off course there is americans that love Bergman movies, like you! I have seen maybe 6-7 bergman movies. I own "Det sjunde inseglet" on vhs (great movie and a big fan of von Sydow) and has a few recorded on vhs that I havent seen yet.

reply

I like Bergmans movies too, all of them. And I am hilarious.

reply

lol bergman makes me fall asleep!

reply

Ive heard about that humour thing but I havent experienced it myself.. I think that is because everything new that comes either freezes to death or gets eaten by polarbears around here, kinda sad really.

..yes Im serious and yes you may quote me on that! :P

reply

Hmm, never noticed it but yeah, many people I've met here really don't know good sense of humor if it so pissed them in the face, thank god I'm not one of them.

If you are an atheist and are 100% proud of it put this as your signature.

reply

Do we look like people in America or Britain? No. Sweden is the country that got most natural (and fake I think) blondes in the world, and overall a lot better looking people than both England and the US. So when you think Sweden+Blond it's actually true.

It's silly to think that we can't go around with T-shirts here :D, as we do have around 25-35c in the summer. DN (Dagens Nyheter, a newspaper) got some comercial campaign going on, where there is a picture with Swedish people on it in winter jackets and a polarbear on the street and with a text that says, "Do you see the world as the world sees you?". I find the comercial very amusing, as many people that I have talked too actually think that we got polarbears walking around here and that we have winter all year long :>.

SweTess I don't know where you live, but here in Stockholm we have a lot of blondes, my girlfriend for example is a natural blonde, and so it a lot of her friends.

reply

Actually, Finland is the country that's got most natural blondes in the world.

reply

No, it actually IS Sweden. Western parts of Finland and eastern of Norway probably have the same blonde factor as Sweden in total, but southeastern Sweden (in particular northern Småland and Östergötland) is the most blonde dense area in the whole world.

The blondest of all is the strong man Magnus samuelsson from Östergötland:

reply

Swedes being more blond than Finnish is quite unlogicall, we in Sweden having loads of people from other countries compared to Finland - they don't have nearly any immigrants...

reply

Lol, ignorant.

reply

You think that everyone in sweden has blonde hair and blue eyes??? Thats a little bit "overkill". Many people has brown (dark/light) hair and green/brown eyes. I have brown hair (fairly dark) and very dark, almost black hair on my face. And then to the weather. We dont live in the northpole, its normal weather where I live. Its cold in the winter and warm in the summer. But our country is quite oblong so in the northern sweden it gets very, and i mean very cold in the winter. But for me who lives in the more middle part of the country dont get that VERY cold winters.

reply

We don't have a sense of homour everything is serious here.

Like when we are out hunting polar bears, I shot a HUGH one in my backyard last week. If I hadn't shot him he would probably have frozen to death because it was like -50C so I really did him a favor.

It also really sucks that I haven't seen the sun in 7 months I kinda have forgotten what it looks like but it's easier hunting polar bears in the dark.

Now I'm gonna go and find my axe beacause there's a polar bear trying to eat my snowplow.

reply

damn funny, i do not think someone will accuse us to have no humor after reading this.

It always surprises me so much when people reveal their stupidity on web forums. Come on, you're on the internet here - maybe look things up a little bit? Ever heard of Google?

Here's an ok web site on Sweden: http://www.sweden.se. I'd recommend "Sweden & Swedes" under quicklinks to the right.

reply

Exactly. I was just about to write that, then I saw your message.

Anyway, I'm from Sweden too. Comments about Sweden from folks like the one started this thread, is something we swedes laugh hysterically about. It's amazing! I've been to many different places on earth, and everywhere people seem to have equal opinions about Swedes. When will you folks learn?

Maybe I get this response because I look like a typical scandinavian, blonde, grey eyes, not short etc etc. But I believe there are a few people out there who know the truth, isn't there? :)

"I thought the film is cool, but I also reckon that it is too over the top on drugs. Is drug abusing so common in Sweden? What do u all think about that???"

I just took a quick look but I didn't see any response to this.
When I saw the movie I thougt like "what will all poeple outside of sweden think about our country now?".
Just so you know; I don't think drug abuse is worse here than in any other country but I understand that some people will think so after seeing this movie. I was quite surprised myself to see that much of it in Storm.

reply

Well to answer that, (havn't seen the movie yet so i don't know how much drug abuse that's in their but, and i just know that you all are gonna bitch about this answer but...)yeas it is. Well at least in my town Örebro about 2h from Stockholm, i think at least 98% do/have tryed/use to do drugs. It's still a big deal, i don't wanna be around that sh*t. But it's sort of every day life, my sister boy friend and his stepdad, just got busted with alot of drugs in the car. Her boyfriend got of the hock but his stepdad got a year, the boyfriend only lost his lisenc.
I don't know if it's just me but here in Örebro, it's just everywhere. They say (we who live here) that almost everybody does it, and the rest are dead or in jail.
But i guess thats different from town to town, thats just how it is here.

People BF's (Bitch fit) are not aprichiated and no coment on my spelling i'm dyslectic.

reply

On the other hand Örebro got woted the most boring town in Sweden two years in a row, I've heard. ; )

No, seriously - I have no straight answer on this. They (who know) say it's become more common in the nightlife and club scene than it was before and I think this can be true. But if that means it's very common today or if it was very uncommon before I can't say. I definitely don't think it's more common here than anywhere else.

Also, we are not liberal (like Holland) when it comes to drugs in any way. And the level of alcohol you "can" have in your blood when driving is much much lower than in the States, for example. I always find it wierd that people are drinking and driving so casually in American films...

Anyway, I think it's also used to show what kind of person he became after some things happened to him. A bit cliched maybe, but still.

reply

What are you people on about? Where exactly is this movie so shockingly "full" of drug use?

I haven't seen it in years but as far as I can recall there was one pot scene and one coke scene and that was it?

Anyway, regardless; I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same in Sweden as in practically any other country in the Western world: if you're not into it, you'll never run into it. If you're into it, it's everywhere.

reply

"hot girls that look like vikings" Bwahaha! :D
Well, the girls here dont really look like vikings to be honest... Allthou that would give a great new perspektive on the word "horny women..." ;)

It is true thou, we have allot of blondes. So many that they lost a bit of the excitement that the rest of the world have about them, I preffer brunettes.
And it can be really cold in the winters, temperatures below -30 Celcius is not something unusual in the northern parts.
But, Sweden is a very internationall country - practically everyone is fludent in english even if we do make the occasional error in spelling ;)
And as a such country we have a great variety of people, so not all are tall sexy blondes. Me myself is a natural blonde with green eyes, but dye my hair in a dark red.
The summers here are really great, beautifull and green with a sun that sometimes stays up all through the night.
We have hot enough summers, so you can walk around in t-shirts without any problems, beleive me!

Drugs? Never see em really... Sure, we have the occasional pothead but thats it really. Pot is not a heavy drug, and i would not call a few rastafaris being a drug-heavy country.
We like to drink thou, drink allot and on any given occasion. Actually, I think pretty much most of our traditions are based on an exscuse to get drunk.

reply

that is so true, allthough it was not a swedish-only custom, me and a friend of mine celebrated a other friend of mines birthday without him even around so. traditions are just excuses to bring the booze... and traditions we have plenty of those.
there are a lot of blonds here, but I prefer the dark ones, and those we also have alot of, and we have very many good looking females and... males. I don't really know about the other places other than scandinavia that has so huge climat variations, in the winter it can get around -30c and in the summer it can get up to 30c.
the humor, I quite like the humor around here, I like the humor here often better than for example the american humor... someone mentioned before that smala sussie is just a rip off of pulp fiction, then you haven't seen small sussie :D wich I really think you should do :D

reply

I agree with most of the posters, and I REALLY think you should come visit Sweden to experience it yourself. I just felt the urge to answer your last question about drugs in sweden - No, its really not common. Compared to other countries heavy drug abuse is uncommon in Sweden. Although "light drugs" like maryjane, nicotine and our all-time favorite alcohol is pretty common.

As I see it, the overexposure of drugs and darkhaired people was a cinematic grip to enchance the atmosphere and to show us what DD's world is like. Not really representing Sweden, but DD's life. Its too bloody cold to grow drugs around here you know ;)

reply

HAAHAHA!

yes, we also have agressive polar-bears roaming the streets.

reply

hm, sounds more like you're the "blonde" one...
