What Secret!?

Okay, I was disappointed in the movie. I thought the mother would find out something big going on in the daughter's life. I'm not talking about the drugs and the sex. Nothing new in that.

I was expecting something big. Like the daughter was a prostitute, or the daughter and the dad were having an affair. Hell, maybe the daughter was planning on killing the parents or bombing the school or something.

I just felt that the title was a bit misleading.

Why on earth would it have to go in that direction to be enjoyable? It was the drama of their situation that made this film so interesting in MHO. Who the hell would have wanted to see the father and daughter cross the line.....not me......yuck

along with what the other poster said, the secret was also in the future when Sam came back, it would be a secret that her mother was ever there. This is slightly referenced in the final journal scene, when she notes that she kept the changed hand-writing becaseu her mother wrote that way and that she is still around.

Just a quick note...In the final scene she was signing a yearbook not writing in the journal. But, I was left slightly unsure as to whether the mother was truly gone or not...???

The title is definately inappropriate. Something like "Possesion" or "Mother's Love" or something would have been better. I mean the whole secret thing is no big deal. Its not like anyone would believe her anyways!! It seemed silly they even had to spell it out in dialog. Well, I guess that made some sense.

Had they not kept it a secret, she would have just ended up in a mental hospital... not as interesting. ;)

ha! I agree about the misleading title, but I don't think I'd ever rent a movie called "Mother's Love".

The secret was that she was really Hannah in Sam's body. They couldn't tell anyone or they'd be considered insane. Also, The Secret doesn't seem to be the original title. What does Si j'étais toi translate to?

Tomorrow's just your future yesterday!

reply

"Si j'etais toi" is french for "If I Were You"

I think "the secret" is a perfectly fine title. it doesn't really make me any LESS interested.

The Secret was Hannah's. She never left Sam's body, she just told her husband that Sam was getting stronger and coming back so they would let each other go. They could never have had a "healthy" relationship with Hannah occupying her daughter's body. I think she was crying when she was watching the tape at the end because she knew she was leaving her life as Hannah behind and moving on with her life as Sam. The only think she kept was her "handwriting" otherwise she was moving on as Sam, which would allow her husband to have a normal life with someone else and for her to move on and have her own life.

The more I talk to you, the more the pain floods back.

reply

Totally agree with you. I saw exactly what you said.

reply

nope i have watched this movie many times and every time i get the feeling she finally passed on and that sam was finally in control and that hannah was finally gone

reply

I tend to agree with your interpretation...although the movie was ambiguous enough that one could have concluded that the daughter had come back and the mother had gone or they were sharing the same body.

reply

If you watched this from the very beginning..during the scene where he tells Hannah/Sam that he believes her..he says "This will be our secret"..that's the secret! They couldn't tell anyone..people would have thought they were crazy!
