REALLY dissapointed
Hi all,
These are my opinions only, though I've heard them repeated countless times here in Hong Kong.
Dragon Squad is an incoherant mess. The whole story seems to happen because that's what the writer wrote; each twist the whim of writer's pen (or keyboard). The movie was totally over stylized, with zoom-in's, flashes of black and white, spinning camera movement (complete with that whoosh sound you always hear in trailers) which makes it appear as if someone was testing every single feature of adobe premiere and accidently saved over the original. What made Hong Kong movies great was the fact that the action was so clever and so well choreographed the camera would sit stationary because what was on the screen was so amazing, any flash of style would be someone poking their head in front of you during the best part, you miss the magic!
We sort of know what happens, but very rarely why; And for the life of me, I can't really explain, because the film never really delivered any of it's messages completely, leaving you with a few "half-ideas" of what this "might have ment". The movie is a huge co-production with an international cast. You'll hear Cantonese, quite a bit of English, and then some Mandarin with a bit of Korean mixed in the middle, it's kind of like Star Wars, everyone just speaks their own language to each other and everyone pretty much understands.
I know a lot of people are excited about Michael Biehn being in this. His part is pretty big but his character is not terribly interesting. His lines seem more like something out of an edutainment program. Clear, slow and with a pause between the next sentance. This is not his fault however, it's the editing and directing of this film, we've all seen what Michael Biehn is capable of.
Sammo Hung's character is briefly explained in the middle of the movie, and something about his daughter and dead wife is thrown in and never resolved.
