This movie depicts the ticker at the bottom of news stations as going left to right. They usually go right to left- you can't read them otherwise.
According to the goofs section of the movie page here, it was an intentional choice by the film makers...anyone have a clue as to why?
to show his paranoia that something was not quite right with the way he was taking in the news. That the news is imperfect in its own right. And that he was possibly fueling his own fire of paranoia by fantasizing the news to compliment his hero complex.

it becomes clear in the end.... when he's in the institution and they're watching golf on tv..... you see that in his mind he's imagining the news on the tv in which people are getting cyanide poisoning from licking bank deposit envelopes...
you can see it fuzz back into the golf program on the tv...
yeah the dude is crazy, but that made the movie quite intense at times.
a decent watch for a lonely wednesday evening!
I think since the film is from the protagonist's point of view, it shows that he is picking up the gist of headlines but not really processing the details.
