It's never said but I either think Hassan did it to unnerve Allen, or that Allen left his own shower running and door ajar when he left his apartment.

I think by the end of the film, you can reasonably argue that he imagined someone broke in- to feed his paranoia and delusion, and to justify his further investigation into the neighbor.

Not only is he paranoid but extremely sleep deprived, I imagine he left the door open and the shower running himself.

That was my take as well. He was sleep-deprived because he was so busy casing out the neighbor, and he was also shower-deprived. It's a loose end that's never tied up, though.

I just saw this movie today in Mexico. I believe Terry's definitely was broken into because there were scratch marks on the dead bolt.

Scratch marks on a dead bolt can easily mean that you don't get the key in the lock right away and miss the keyhole when trying to unlock the door. I'm pretty sure every doorknob and dead bolt has scratch marks on them...maybe even little scratch marks on the key locks of your car.
