Why filmed in Canada ?

Hi..
Really loved this movie, excellent and entertaining, but what bothered me is that it was filmed in Canada.
I don't have anything against Canada, but this movie need to look authentic especially that it deals with patriotism and civic duties, so you would expect to see scenes of American cities not Canadaian ones, i mean i could tell it was filmed in Canada, the streets and the buildings, so why didn't the production company just film it in the USA ?

Films are often shot in different places than the location the movies story is supposed to be based in. Simple answer is money. Different places offer different tax breaks, benefits, etc for a film to shoot there, the incentive being that if it is filmed there, it will pump some money into the local economy. This was an independent film and probably didn't have a huge budget, so they filmed in Canada because it was more economically feasible.

How could you tell it was filmed in Canada by the streets and buildings? It could have been filmed in another US city. I fail to see how Canadian streets and buildings differ from American ones.

reply

hi..you can tell by the streets and buildings because Canadian streets and buildings are more European like, they are usually narrow not wide like america, the streets have Blocks and bricks like Europe which is not found in america, the buildings look old and traditional not new and modern, that is how i differentiated !!

reply

^ Um, sorry but you're wrong. The streets and buildings look very similar, in fact sometimes identical, that even I often can't tell the two apart. I live here in Toronto, Canada, and have been to New York City, Chicago, Orlando, Buffalo NY, etc. tons of times. I don't find any much different at all between the look of the cities. Both nations have wide streets and modern buildings. Europe is different, you are right about that, but Canada looks exactly like the US, not Europe. Culturally speaking it is also very similar to the US, but in that sense it is in between Europe and the US.

I'm from Europe, I've never been in USA or Canada. Could you believe me if I'm telling you that I can tell if a movie is shot in USA or in Canada? It's not magic, it's a thing called "sense of observation". The architecture is similar only to a point, but there are differences. The shape of buildings, the windows, the layout of a town, the downtown, the suburbs, the back alleys, ...almost everything has an American flavor or a Canadian one. Look at Vancouver, where this film has been shot. It is like no other American city.

I traveled a lot in USA and Canada...virtually, using Google StreetView. You can laugh, but every time I can saw extremely easy the differences between these two countries.

I cannot say if, culturally, Canada is between Europe and US, but visually Canada has somewhat a slightly European appearance (or influence). It's something like a mix of 90 percent USA and 10 percent Europe. You said "Canada looks exactly like the US". Well, as an external observer, I can tell you that I saw the differences.

it costs a lot less to shoot films/tv shows in canada for some reason, loads of shows set in the US are shot in/around vancouver especially. even stuff like 'x-files' was almost entirely shot in canada

I have no problem with films being short in Canada, but I do have a problem when they pretend they are in the U.S.

Why Canada? The American writer(from New York), and Executive Producers had 2 Million Dollars to tell the story they had developed. Peter Krause, Eli Rothman, and Andrew Lanter hired the Canadian Technical Producers Tina Pehme, and Kim Roberts to get the job done. Tina, and Kim were responsible for "FUBAR" as well as "It's All Gone Pete Tong" which were very successful low budget films at the time. The Decision to film in Vancouver was made because it was were the money would go the farthest. The Dollar is the greatest driving force in the Film Industry, and the Canadian Film production industry creates a first class product, more efficiently, and Cost effective than any other place in the world. Almost every Movie or TV show made is not filmed in the scripts real world setting because it's to expensive.Establishing Shot's of any place in the world, can be edited into any film to give the illusion of whatever location the script requires. I was the Key Grip on Civic Duty, and was responsible for building the green screen that was used to make the set appear as a New York Brownstone.CGI technology has reached a point now in which it's cheaper to create locations digitally than film in practical locations. Vancouver,Montreal, and Toronto Have been the source of many American movies, and TV shows over the past 60 plus years that you would never recognize as filmed in Canada.X Files, I Robot, X-Men,Smallville,Arrow,The Flash, Battlestar Galactica, Rambo-First Blood, Fringe,Outer Limits, All the Stargate TV shows, Tron-Legacy, Rise of the Planet of the Apes are just a few examples of productions filmed here in Vancouver. Movie Magic can make you believe almost anything, especially now in the Digital age, but the real magic is making the most of the Money. I was proud to be a part of the making of this film, as it was a product of film making passion for everyone invovled( we didn't do it for the money, a truly Independent Film).Civic Duty was one of the first films to Question the Politics of the post 9/11 era, and I believe that it's a conversation that transcends all Nations. What is the True Cost of Freedom, is a question that every human being on Earth must ask.
