Over There/Tour Of Duty?

Anyone else get that whole deja vu feeling like me? I mean, I know war movies and TV series have the cliches of course, that's a given (angry other-ethnicity hates whitey, smart well educated "What the *beep* are you doing in the army, as an Enlited man instead of an officer?" soldiers, the cynical veteran Sergeant who's been through all this crap before), but just watching 'Over there' Reminds me of 'Tour of Duty'. I wonder if anyone else gets that same feeling.

Someone else who thinks that too! I used to watch Tour of Duty when it came on TNT everyday and I absolutely loved the series. One day I was having a military TV/Movie marathon and I watched an episode of Over There after one of Tour of Duty and couldn't help but notice they seemed somewhat similar. I guess it's a good thing since I like them both.

The similarities are obvious (and unavoidable given the nature of warfare at the unit level). The same parallels could also be drawn with "COMBAT!". The "toys" change and the slang changes but human nature confronted with the prospect of imminent death or dismemberment never does. A visceral response to these circumstances is the one constant in warfare.

Yeah, of course the similarities are there with Combat, Tour of Duty and Over There. But with each show I think they get more realistic, and of course they are all covering different wars. Tour of Duty has always been one of my alltime fav tv shows and I've watched it many times on DVD. If Over There had run for longer and had more episodes, giving us a greater insight into each member of the unit, then I'm sure I would have grown to love the Over There characters as much as I love the characters in TOD.

TOD was a classic! This show didn't get a chance!
