Can't understand it

I'm a native English speaker, admittedly from England, but with quite a lot of experience of American English, but I just can't understand enough of what the characters are saying in this series to make it watchable.

Am I the only one?

reply

Yes.

reply

Im from England and understand it perfectly.

The only thing I dont understand is why oh why they canned the show!
Perhaps Season 2 should be about the Brits/French and other countries that have sent smaller forces. Then Season 3 can pick up from where Season 1 left off.
Or like CSI have Over There - Allied Forces

reply

France never sent any troops to Iraq since the invasion.

Plz visit my profile to take a look at unsolved threads.Plz use relevant title,SOLVED if so.

reply

well the show got canned because by popular opinion is that it was to true to the war so the government didnt want bad press

i like your idea but i doubt it would be allied forces aliies were in world war 2 nowadays its called ISAF or NATO id like to see a full show or mini series about the war in afghanistan in which my canadian brothers are fighting along side several other nations in the isaf forces you know mix it up a little

Love the way the Americans always make out they were in WW1 and WW2 from the start. How many European soldiers in Saving Private Ryan or Once were soldiers?
Just Germans! Not flaming ya LVFD-Bowers-51, just my ironic British sense of humour (with a U) =]

reply

lol yes i agree it gets very annoying how the americans not to insult them or nothin always think if they werent thier the first and second world wars wouldent have been won and i mean especially the first world war which has so many defining history points and america wasent in until like the last year or so

the first world war is what gave us canadians the chance to break away from our mother country and become our own nation

air combat was founded in the first world war

trench warfare had died out because of the first world war and it even happend i belive around the last year they got more into open combat

the first tank was invented by the british forces during the first world war

and the machine gun was i belive invented during the first world war

now i dunno how accurate all those facts are most were from the top of my head except the canadian becomeing thier own nation that i just read from a page in a canadian military history book:)

and now for something important...does somebody spell humour without a U!?!?!?

where did he say they were in ww1 or 2 from the start?
I dont think there were any british in Private Ryan, but it was about the US part of it , which was a big part, in fact i believe the US took more casualties on the beach than the britsh did.

"Once were soldiers" ??

Are you talking about "once were warriors" the NZ film about Maori?
OR
"We were Soldiers" the Vietnam film? Either way your not gonna see any british soldiers in there.

-apologies if you were right with the title, and itsa ww2 film i aint heard of.

reply

hes saying he loves how the eruos are seen as not involved in any wars where as if you look at the war in afghanistan you have dozens of nations involved with ISAF

i think once were soldiers might be a typo but im not sure

even if the us took more casualties on the two beaches as well as the pointe du hoc

it doesent compare to the british soldiers and civilians who died since the beginning also canada had just broken its chains from queen britian at the time so alot of canadians were connected to brit units like the sixth airborne

i could also be wrong also tho

still i think my idea of a spinoff involving isaf in afghanistan would be good maybe follow a different nations unit each week one week canadian light recon next work british royal marines next week us special forces all of them searching in the same region for a certain taliban leader

Getting back to the original poster, I'm from Australia and found that I could understand it perfectly well. It was a little difficult to figure out who was who in the first episode with them all looking alike in their combat gear, but that was part of the fun of sticking with the series, and having the characters gradually unfold so you could easily recognise them as the series went on. I kept hoping they would have an episode that told us a bit about Sargent Scream, but really, apart from the one with the French woman at the orphanage we never got to know much about him. What a shame there was only 13 episodes.

The French were 'Over There'? FYI the French did not participate in Iraqi Freedom in any capacity whatsoever. Not hating, its just a fact.

In regards to an American produced series about Brits, well that would cancel the series even quicker. This format using foreign forces won't work in the US. Strike Back is particularly successful in the US but its only with the aire of 007 that it does so.

reply

that's because it is in military jargon. I was in the US army.
