Quite possably the worst movie I've seen this year.

This movie was horrible...Just awful. Those involved in making this
ought to be ashamed of themselves for not standing up and objecting at
what a waste of time and money this movie has been for the world.
Mary-Louise Parker should stick to weeds.

Please do not watch this movie.

well, I'm not blaming the cast, because terrible things can happen in editing--
but I concur that this was a form of penance to watch, and goes on my (lengthening) list of "things to show prisoners"

The problem here isn't the actors, who are all marvelous. It is the script. This is not an uplifting feel good movie. You won't feel positive about life after suffering through this. The ending is simply wretched.

I agree. It was hopeless, disgusting and stupid. Everyone was unlikeable, to say the least, except Mary-Louise Parker, but I kept waiting for her to stand up and be strong in some way and she disappointed me by keeping quiet or staring open-mouthed when bad things were happening or by running off to her old boyfriend. Also, I kept waiting for the serial rapist mystery to develop in some way--possibly the dead son? and it was never mentioned again even though it was brought up in a significant way in the beginning. I thought this movie was just putrid---but it kept me watching because of the performances, and I thought something worthwhile would come of it. Instead, it went completely downhill.

Actually, the serial rape was found out to have been committed by the dead brother.

I have to agree that I found this movie quite depressing, and didn't enjoy it. The actors wer good, but that's about it. I read the book a few years ago when I got it out of the library. I wasn't actually going to read it because it didn't sound interesting enough, but it wasn't too long so I thought I'd try it. It's one of the most frustrating books I've read, because you dislike the characters and what they do so much, and there seem to be few redeeming qualities. Except maybe with the mother, Mary Margaret, who you start sympathizing with a little more once you begin to understand her and what she'd been through.

But then the ending of the movie was completely different from the book, and they changed such vital and important details. I don't understand why they did this really (without giving too much of the book away incase people did want to read it). I suppose it was to make people feel slightly better about how things turned out. Anyway, it really wasn't enjoyable to me.

I wanted to gouge my eyes out after seeing this. No redeeming qualities about it whatsoever.

I couldn't stop laughing at it. Idk why, but I just never took it seriously.

Like someone said in the review, the family's Volvo was the best actor in the movie, and I agree with that.

I found 'Vinegar Hill' to be very powerful movie, but it was deeply, DEEPLY disturbing!

Contrary to what others on this thread have said, 'Vinegar Hill' is very well crafted piece of film-making. I have no complaints about the quality of the script or the direction. The performances of the cast (in particular that of Tom Skeritt) were absolutely top-notch.

My problem was with the content. It was clearly inappropriate for a daytime viewing. The themes explored (sexual violence, spouse and child abuse etc) were very disturbing indeed. Many scenes were extremely distressing to watch, and the film should NOT have been screened on a friday afternoon on Channel 5.

A few days after I saw 'Vinegar Hill', the BBC screened the brilliant British horror movie 'Salvage', which features full-frontal nudity, very inventive swearing and more blood and gore than you can shake a stick at. It was shown at midnight to stop it being viewed by an inappropriate audience. Despite the content of 'Salvage', I can honestly say that I would sooner let children watch a film like that rather than chance them catching 'Vinegar Hill'.

I would not let kids watch this movie any more than I would let them watch 'Blue Velvet'. It is an excellent film - but it's NOT family viewing!
