The second act was awful to sit through.

I understand the point of the scenes with Master Chin were to highlight his arrogance and his downfall but my God. So he takes his student(s) at his word (whom his friend rightly pointed out were unreliable) and just straight-up murders a dude on his birthday in front of his family? Honor my ass, that's being a horrible person. Did Huo Jianyan or whatever his name really do this?

Yes, politicidal, starting with your second sentence, that made me mad. And instead of them leaving the restaurant for the fight (for which should never
have happened until something could have been established), they trashed the restaurant.

If you remember, the man that he killed said at the outset something like,
"It was not like that" when Jet Li's character accused him of beating up
his student.

Character is revealed by how you treat people with no power.
