worst movie ever, so predictable, so horribly done with its connection to romeo and juliet.
whoever wrote this made it the cheesiest (don't mind the pun) movie, ever, the lines and acting was so horrible and stupid.
oh and if i was italian i think i would kill myself seeing this movie with how stereotypical it was.

Oh, well, I'm italian and I didn't get offended by the "stereotyped" image of us in the movie, we're used to it (I was surprised there was no machine gun thruout the whole movie!).
And then I must say that I've seen Verona,Italy but not Verona,New Jersey.. I mean I'm sure "italo-americans" behave very differently from italians.. so I can't judge.
But a couple of things about the movie:
the families are from Verona, but behave like people from southern Italy (make pizza, eat cannoli.. Also San Gennaro is the saint of Napoli, which has nothing to do with Verona). Although both town are in Italy the mentality there is completely different..it's like comparing Boston with Tijuana!
And a second thing: why can americans pronounce perfectly the word "pizza", but say "spagheTi" and "caNoli" instead of "spaghetti" and "cannoli"???
I'm not exactly sure if I understand your question. You are saying that Americans don't pronounce both t's and both n's? I'd say its because double consonants don't get as much emphasis in English as they do in Italian. I don't speak Italian, but I am ascertaining this fact from your question. Often times in English you are suppose to, but it just doesn't always come across. I don't see how it could possibly hinder understanding.
I have to say from my experience Italians are horrible at understanding American's attempt at pronouncing an Italian word. I'd say a word; they'd look puzzled and after I said the same thing three times, they'd eventually say what sounded to me exactly the same. When a foreign person in America speaks english, I can usually understand them even when there english is very bad, and trust me, many Indian and Middle Eastern exchange students have very thick accents that make their english very difficult to understand.
Also, my family pronounces cannoli even worse. We pronounce it as gannoli. Not sure why; I guess that is how my mom's grandparents pronounced it, who were originally from Sicily, not too far from Palermo and came over in the late 1800s and beginning of the 20th century.
Since this discussion was about language, I should probably check my grammar and spelling, but I'm not. Therefore, I make no warranties on the quality.
Sorry afbfy6 if my comment sounded somehow offensive: I was just wondering: I know you have "problems" with double consonants, but at least in the movie, the word PIZZA was perfectly pronounced.
So I thought "if they can say ZZ why can't they say NN???"
Just a stupid question!
About the fact we don't understand foreigners speaking italian I can make only suppositions: maybe because we have a very easy phonetic system each letter is a precise sound so a little "change" due to a foreign accent might make the word hard to understand.
And then we italians are not used to hearing foreign people speaking our language as much as americans are.
Just one more thing:
in italian "cannoli" (like "spaghetti") is plural. Singular is "cannolo".

"Certain words have double consonants. Unlike in English, those consonants have a property called geminated consonants. That means you must pronounce a double consonant with more energy, giving more length to the sound. As an alternative, try pronouncing them separately but with less pause between the two"
I'm pretty sure we don't pronounce "NN" any differently from "N" because we never learned that it makes a difference in Italian. Or we probably don't notice the difference.
Or maybe we just can't do it ;) I sure as hell couldn't tell you what "NN" is supposed to sound like.

shareI think the cheesiness and predictability are what makes it so great. If you're watching the movie expecting something with five star ratings and extreme action and intensity, yeah, the movie's going to suck. But expecting a fun little family film for which to get a night of laughs, this movie is totally what you're looking for. I think it's great, but I wasn't expecting a whole lot of action. I was watching it because it sounded funny. And it was.
