Whats with the butthole friend John

Guy doesnt have a kind word to say to Vince the entire movie. Its explained that he has no job, family and doesnt want Vince to leave the neighborhood. Leave where? hes on the Eagles. And it seems to me these guys all have problems. Vince should have put his lights out with that comment about his old lady. This whole subplot makes no sense in this movie. Guys I have known over 35 years would never keep at each other like that. what a ....

You said it right there. He has no job, family, and doesn't want to lose vince as a friend. If Vince made the eagles I guess he thought that Vince wouldn't care about the "old crew" anymore. When you're down and out you want everybody else down there with you. That's why he is acts that way towards Vince.

I think that John was just mentally retarded....He couldn't really control his feelings or actions..he had no choice in the matter.

Just a couple of comments. All of you make comments about friendship and family - true. Plus add the fact that his brother, who he was probably close to, was killed in Vietnam. The fear of loss can make people say hurtfull things as a defense mechanism. Vince was mature enough to understand this and when he sent him a beer it was his way of saying, Everything is going to be OK. It is difficult to see this as a positive but it shows that Vince was a great guy and loved by his pals. GREAT story! I really got choked up when his dad told him that night on the porch, "When I told you not to get your hopes doesn't mean that I didn't"...AWESOME! Vince Papale is a real life superhero and won't even admit it which makes it even more inspirational. I have been around a#* %$!*& that never amounted to anything and thought they were all that. It was great to watch the featurette that showed the real guy just being real. I love it!!!

John wasn’t the guy who lost his brother, was Pete. Dude was douche bag. But it is true, most of us do have a friend like that. Thought they really over did it though in the movie. Considering could tell he was no athlete, only made his character even more annoying. 😉

John loved football too. He was probably a little jealous of his friend. John himself probably dreamed of being a pro player. Probably his ego gets in the way. Heck, after watching this movie, I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had stayed in football.

In the end though we see that John is very supportive of his friend - he cheers from the stands.

Yeah John was cool with him at the end of the movie.

Did you see the scene where Max and Vince are alone in the bar talking? Max explained it to him. Basically yeah, Johnny was afraid Vince was going to leave them once he got into the NFL lifestyle. I don't see how he's mentally slow. Being a dick was just a defense mechanism for Johnny. Btw, it was Pete's brother who died in 'Nam not Johnny's.

I think everyone has at least one friend who is more of a hindrance than a helper. And it is sometimes very hard to dump a friend.
