Poison Oak burning (spoilers)
Why did they decide to burn poison oak at the scene where they first got attacked by the Indians?

Answer: Poison oak is poisonous therefore creating a barrier between them and the awaiting Indians so they can escape. Walnut explains this when he tells the story of him witnessing a guy who died by breathing in the smoke.
