JLO says she cannot speak Spanish? Do u believe that *beep* I sure dont

Haha okay first of all, she's an effin latina. We all know that. Secondly she speaks with spanish accent, and with that I mean for example the Rrrrrr. It's funny to see her make sentences with Spanish accent. Also in the scene where she's having dinner with this NAFTA guy or whatever she says a line of 10 words in 2 seconds, only Spanish people can do that. In the movie she actually speaks a couple spanish sentences totally fluently, and that's weird, because she says she cant speak Spanish.

Conclusion:

Making a movie where JLO says she can't speak Spanish is like making a movie where
Jackie Chan doesn't know how to speak Chinese. Why on earth would a scriptwriter do that?

reply

Actually, it's really not that hard to believe. Her Spanish has a distinctly American accent to it, and you can hear it in the movie. Plus, many people of Hispanic descent who are born/raised in the US never learn Spanish.

reply

it's the character? Not Jlo? In any event, they probably made the choice to make it an English-speaking movie so that it would have a larger audience in the U.S. So, therefor they had to explain why everyone in Mexico was speaking English. Saying Jlo's character can't speak Spanish explains that.

Well they were trying to make a subplot out of her supressing her childhood as the child of migrant workers and her family being killed which resulted in her being adopted, presumably by Anglos. And her dying her hair blond and denying any Spanish speaking ability seemed to be her passing as white but this attachment to Eva made her change to embrace this part of herself. Think this got too boggled down with the magnitude of the rest of the plot though.

You were the only person on this thread to get this. I guess the other posters missed the flashbacks.

Haha. Okay, first of all, ignoring the fact that you're talking about a character in a movie, and not J Lo herself, *I'm* an "effin latina" and I can guarantee you I'd speak Spanish like someone taking first year Spanish in high school--and I grew up with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who all spoke Spanish (as well as English) to me regularly.

It *is* possible to understand a language perfectly but not speak it like a native speaker. I could probably string together a few sentences with a semi-convincing accent if I needed to, but that's about it. My first language is English.

BTW, Spanish people are from Spain--Antonio Banderas, for example. Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican.

BTW, Jackie Chan grew up in Hong Kong and Peking. Jennifer Lopez grew up in the Bronx, NY. There's a difference.

In addition, the character she played didn't speak Spanish, she was raised in the US. I am "effin" Italian and can't speak a word of it.

reply

I'm Spanish-Mexican-American, and I do not speak a word of Spanish. My parents are 1st generation Spanish/Mexicans but they didn't see the need to teach us because the only way you learn it is to pick it up. That's how they learn. But we grew up on military bases and there were rarely any Latinos on those bases. Oh well. It didn't effect us any and we turned out all right.

Jennifer Lopez is Puetro Rican,as she is so proud of telling anyone every 5 seconds. Her Spanish is terrible since the spoken language varies from Latino/Hispanic nations to another. It's like how American English is different from the Brits English: meanings and how they are said is different and has different meanings specifically.

Don't sweat. It's not big deal if Jennifer Lopez doesn't speak Spanish. She makes up for it in other talents. And if I could name one, I would!

The New York Rangers suck. And Sidney Crosby is a cry baby!
