Why plot to have their sister cause tension between the two.....

I don't think they were planning on that. It was more of a last resort since the sister plan didn't work out. Which makes sense since the kidnapping is a pretty terrible plan (unless they were going to murder them as well). They would just get their medals taken away once the guys got free.
