why should 'true Beatles fans' not like it?

If you claim to love the Beatles and to "get them" then you should like this film. Not only that but Paul and Ringo liked it, if they hadn't they wouldn't have put on airs and graces and just been nice to Julie. It's a jukebox musical, they haven't taken anything away from the original songs they have just tweaked and bent there meaning to fit the story. Not to say that our interpretations are right and the films are wrong though because that is the point of the songs, for us to take what we want from them, Strawberry fields forever may mean something totally different to you than it does to me but it doesn't matter as long as it means something. I'm getting a tattoo of "tomorrow may rain so I'll follow the sun", I don't know why I like the lyric I just do, I don't know what I'd say Blackbird means but it moves me and I love the song. Some bits of the movie aren't great but overall I think it is a wonderful film and I think George and John would have liked it too. So please be kind and don't say people aren't true fans just because you didn't like it, it doesn't mean they are less of a fan it just means it spoke to them in a way it didn't speak to you.

Very well said.

In fact, I LOVE the beatles and have drove close to 500 miles to go see Paul McCartney, and I LOVE this movie!!! It was great, had all of my favorite songs were in it, and it was artsy and creative. The way the did the songs and incorperated them into the movie was cool. PERFECT representation of their songs.
Only thing: if in the Let it be scene, in the church they were implying that "mother Mary" is Jesus' Mother, the. Their wrong, Paul was referring to his own mother, he wrote it for her when she died, her name was Mary. They may have not been implying that, but it's a common misconception that I wanted to clarify anyway. :)

I agree about the excellence of this movie and as such it is not meant to be taken literally but more symbolically.

ie in a Cloud Atlas way "everything is connected" and the Beatles were in fact just 4 lads trying their hands at forming a rock band and relating their own life experiences in their songs, so eg the Mother Mary part works well by extending Paul's own feelings to the plight of civil rights people.

just as well she did not include In My Life as I am sure I would have had an emotional breakdown, such is the feeling in those words.

the Hold Me Tight sequence was amazing in showing how this simple song had totally different meaning "across the Atlantic" BUT if you were a teen when it was released you should ALSO have your OWN memories suddenly re-activated

The studio probably cut them a check for their endorsement.

The songs are from ok to good but the script is not more than another silly teenage story (love, unlove, friendship, more love, more unlove, more friendship, more love and even more love, etc). I give this (as a movie) a 6/10 or 7/10. If you are a Beatles fan there's nothing like the actual Beatles music.

^^ What LeonardoValle said.

I am a huge Beatles fan, I watched this last night for the first time, and I thought, "Really?! THIS is the movie that people are so crazy about?!" I mean, it wasn't horrible, but it was just a regular boy-meets-girl flick, like LV said. I came here to see if others agreed.

The next time I want a visual Beatles fix, I'll put in A HARD DAY'S NIGHT or maybe THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE.

These "true Beatles fans" are actually people who have been told that the cool kids don't like people covering Beatles songs. They can't actually tell you why, except to regurgitate something they read. Hell, I've always loved 'Dear Prudence', and I now think this movie's version is better than the original.

reply

I don't think it is about covering Beatles songs. Actually, hearing Beatles songs for two hours straight, even though they are covers (I specifically liked everything that Sadie sang), was the ONLY thing about this film that kept me watching it until the end, otherwise I would have stopped watching it in the middle of the film. I find the film very cheesy in general and I did not get sentimental at all once. In fact, I kept laughing at how they put all the songs very out of place.

reply

Well, it's a musical, and in my opinion, they are all cheesy... I mean, look at West Side Story. It's hard to really attach to gang fights where they dance and sing.

reply

Only a stupid Apple fanboy would like this movie.

The Beatles are like a religion to me, I was raised listening to them and I still do, everyday, for the past 36 years. I waited until last night to see it, I was VERY skeptical. I loved it from the opening scene. I think it was one of the best homages ever done to the Beatles. WIthout transforming or imitating their already perfect songs, they offered a different take on the songs and the arrangement of the music. I loved it. I'm a Beatles fan.

I always find it funny -- not to mention ludicrous -- when people assume a sense of "ownership" when it comes to fandom. A person can love The Beatles and love the film. Period.

I couldn't have said it better myself, OldFriendOfTheChristys

It's true though. I'm a "true Beatles fan" and I love this movie. Truthfully, this movie was the reason I got into the Beatles and love their music as much I do now.
