Sorry, I had to say it because it bothered me so much during the film. Couldn't they have found a better looking guy for the lead? He is way, way out of Evan Rachel Wood's league. Like way out.

That's actually one of the things that bothered me about the film. The central romance didn't feel like a deep and romantic connection, it felt like he was just going after the girl was out of his league, just because she was out of his league.
Why make a film about a guy who's just after a girlfriend upgrade?
Young countercultural people didn't think in terms of "not in so-&-so's league" back then. They considered the whole person, not just surface appearance.
