Hey, I'm an American and I could not tell you. For my 16th birthday, I went out to dinner with my parents, got a few gifts, and, then went to school the next day unchanged.

I had the stomach flu for my 16th birthday! turning 16 is nothing special at all.

16 used to be the age at which girls debuted into society (basically an announcement to the world that they were now "on the market" marriage purposes), which meant that they could now participate in social events reserved for the world of adults (like going to the opera or attending balls). Now, debutante balls are usually held for girls who are already 18 and in their first year of college (at least after they've graduated high school) partly because it's socially improper and possibly illegal for a 16 year old girl to get married to a 23 year old man (4 years of college and a 1 year grand tour of Europe) in the US. However, 16 is still seen as a transition into adulthood year for girls (now marked by the ability to get a driver's license, a decent part-time job [a number of child labor laws have laxed standards for 16-17 year olds] and the potion of getting a GED instead of finishing the remaining 2 years of high school), much like a quincenera.

"I wanna, I gotta be adored."

In the UK, 16 is the leaving school age (when you do your GCSE's) and the age you become "legal". You can also marry at 16 but not many kids marry at that age lol
