One thing that puzzled me - when the smugglers were at the beach, Jongikhaya got into a fight with some of them. I couldn't see what sparked that off. Can anyone help out with that?

What more, it was part of Carmen's "job" to keep the customs guys busy so they wouldn't interfere with the smuggling. She was supporting both herself and José (Jongikhaya) with the income, and of course his male pride was hurt.
