was the japanese girl dead?

she was still making sounds in the elevator, so wasn't sure. that's kind of a big deal. if he was *beep* a dead girl, then it can be a movie about watermelon, necrophelia, and misogyny all in one.

I agree with you entirely! She was dead (i think it was a drug overdose)and it was really sad/disturbing sadistic that they did that. In fact, im glad somebody mentioned this after so long, because i was checking the messages and everybody was prasing this movie but nobody seemed to care about this part. I found this movie interesting, e.g. the funny singing and dancing and the guy turning into a fish like sea monster thing in the water. But there were a few things about this movie which absolutely disgusted me. First up, the fact that after the porn star was dead, inseatd of sending her back home or giving her a funeral they continued to use her for porn. Ok, she was a porn star and stuff, but she was DEAD, and even so deserves some respect, something the porn industry obviously doesn care about. But the other thing which disgusted me was the fact that the good samaritan girl who had found her (and you think, its good, somebody actually cares), turns out to be just as bad as the guy and the porn bosses, because instead of being disgusted or running away from the whole scene, she stood and watched(voyerism), and even seemed to be getting pleasure from it. Then at the end he sticks it into her mouth. I didn't think she enjoyed it at all, because when he did that she was standing absoluetly still with no reaction. One of the messages in this movie seems to be that women are treated like sex-objects(both the porn star and the taiwanese girl), and they get drawn into things like drugs, porn etc. I was so depressed aftet aht ending, i really felt like writing to the director and complaining. I hope we are not the only 2 who felt this way, i sincerely hope there are more poeple. if not, then God help our sick demented society.

I don't understand this approach to the movie--all of this stuff:

Seems to be really latched in to what the movie is doing, but then you say you were mad that the movie did it because it was depressing/disgusting. But isn't it more honest and powerful for the movie to take a clear-eyed look at porn and condemn it for what it is, rather than having some kind of personal redemption (like the woman running away) at the end?

reply

I guess i agree with you there, it's proably better to condemn the porn industry rather than giving it redemption. I was just a bit too disturbed by that scene, thats why my post is a bit too extreme. But its a film, and i know i shouldnt take it to heart so easily.

hmm...do you know that the porn actor and the samaritan girl actually knew each other? she's not a voyeur...she's just dumbfounded by the fact that the guy she loved was actually a porn actor...the ending scene was intriguing, as that was the only moment the porn actor enjoyed "true" sexual pleasure with the woman he loves...

reply

Yes I knew they knew each other. And actually, she was a voyeur, she wasnt just dumbfounded, she started enjoying watching him *beep* a dead woman, which makes her just as guilty. I dont care what anybody says, she was DEAD. Anyway, when he stuck it in her mouth she froze and didnt seem to move, so dont think she was very happy about it, maybe shocked/disappointed? Even if he loved her, that was no way to show his love. There was no love in that scene, it was really aggressive, forced it bang right in her mouth. I felt sorry for her even though she was just as bad. Hey, if a guy did that to me, even my boyfriend, Id get sooo angry id give him a good hard slap. And I would be furious to find out he was a porn star and never told me about it. As somebody else posted, this film is very misogynistic.

I still don't think the film is really misogynistic--I think it portrays misogyny and all inhumanity in an extremely negative light. Especially when you consider that it's a sequel to Tsai's best-loved film, which is about innocent longing, you can see that this one is really about people becoming cold to humanity and how sad that can be.

Also, I don't know if you can see this on video, but if you watch the film in a theater you can see tears running down the woman's face in that final shot of her profile.

I think they tried to show the girl was alive since you can see very well her chest "breathing" in the beginning. But after a while she could have died, I don't know... I also noticed that her mouth was shut, so she was probably alive. It is an strange fact the girl didn't call an ambulance!

That tears in the woman's face in the (almost)final shot was really an interesting point. And also, she relaxed her arms after a while (in the real final shot), as if she was relieved, or something else, after a moment of ecstasy (she was "screaming" in pleasure just before)...

The movie have good things, but that raw-porn scenes was too much for me... To much porn in a anti-porn movie...
