Great script

Read the script for this a couple of years ago and I thought it was excellent. Was working for a production company looking to finance it at the time, but in the end there were just a couple of concerns that couldn't be resolved. Am glad it got made however - very much in the style of Johnnie To or Derek Yee's crime thrillers, with a cracking twist that I haven't seen before. Of all the scripts I have read, this really stands out as one of the better ones. Can't wait to see it. (I can guarantee you that I have no professional attachment to this film whatsoever. Wish i had though!)

don't hold your breath

Admittedly, I left after 20 minutes. I couldn't stand it. the characters were over the top annoying (however Cantonese that's supposed to be), when they weren't being annoying they were wooden, and worse was when they spoke they said really stupid things (oh wait, that was the script).

Dreadful, and I mean DREADFUL plagiarism of camera techniques copied from evrything from Snatch, to Pulp Fiction to Layer Cake. Sincerest form of flattery? And all this is just the first 20 minutes...

Then there are these stupid and I MEAN STUPID computer generated blood scenes instead of using bog standard 50 year old technology with exploding red ink. Then the camera work was like an amateur (i.e. me) making a documentary of his backyard.

geee--adddd it was unbearable.

The main character was this "look at me, I'm really deep you know, I jsut sort of found myself killing people so terribly efficiently, dare I say with a touch of poetry, with pistols shoved down the back of my pants and snappy ( not ) chats with the victims, as I toy with them as a killer whale does with a seal pup, as an eagle does with a mouse, as ... as... er... yeah. Oh the humanity!!! I need lluurrvve, not more brylcreem, but sweet sweet luuurrvvee."

and lots of guns. guns are so done. so yesterday. how about a damn story? help we need to rescue our film! I know, let's have a guy walking along with a gun, and the camera sort of following the point of the gun! Awesome! genius!

whoever said this was a bad film must not like the artistic genre. This film is an attempt, and let's leave it at that. As an attempt, it has been done very well.

There are scenes in there that I wish I could understand. However towards the end, these confusing scenes made more sense.

BTW this movie reminds me of Memento.

As for the individual, my fellow countryman, who said this should have been left in Cantonese, well, heck no. Dubbed it may be, but Cantonese is not the official language representing our nation or our ethnic group. It is just another dialect. An over-rated dialect.

reply

stop lecturing people about what is artistic or not artistic. this movie plain sucks. you sound like someone who have to love something just because people tells us it is cool and good and you acted like you are supposed to like it because it is cool.

the director and writer doesn't know about enough the Chinese language and how Cantonese is spoken and its nuances and every words except those spoken by Francis Ng and Ti Lung sounds like they are reading word by word from a script instead of actually acting. they are not natural at all. The original voices of Francis Ng and Ti Lung are in Cantonese and you are silly for insisting it to be dubbed in Mandarin.

are you sure you know how Chinese people really speak and how Cantonese is really spoken? and Cantonese is an overrated dialect? Mandarin is also just another dialect which was MADE INTO AN OFFICIAL LANGAUGE BY THE PEOPLE REPUBLIC OF CHINA. Mandarin is not superior to Cantonese and neither is Cantonese superior to Mandarin. nothing more ! nothing less! read more about history before you start spouting off nonsense. you are just showing the world what a farking moron you are!

this movie is comparable to Johnnie To? it is not even comparable to slapstick nonsensical comedy by Stephen Chow. There is absolutely nothing special, mysterious, original, thrilling and artistic about this movie. it is a very simple straightaway movie about a reluctant assassin and shot in a pretentious MTV style that the director think is cool but come across as belaboured and contrived. everything about this movie has been done to death already by both HongKong and Hollywood filmmakers.

comparable to Memento? just because it shows flashback? Reverse time-frame movies like Memento and Irreversible works by structuring every part of the movie to work flow smoothly both forward and backward. this movie just uses flashback. it is not Memento in anyway imaginable.

I have been told IMDB are full of farking cultist fanboy morons who talk a lot of crap about things they don't understand and about how cool a movie are just because they are hyped as cool or just because they feel superior to like something different. I experienced first-hand just how farking stupid and ignorant fanboyist people in this very section.

After almost 3 years, I watched this movie again (as I said I love Asian movies and this was on TV).

I have no idea why, I understood it in a totally different way than first time. Once again I was really amazed by Francis Ng acting skills, and the plot and directing are excellent. I think the first time I got carried away by the funny/foolish moments.

As Darkmax said, there are confusing scenes, but in the end if you followed up the movie correctly it gets crystal clear, and this is what left me with a good impression this time. Maybe this movie just needs more attention, it's not the classic hitman flic where you just watch shooting and that's it. This one has a nice plot and a totally different directing approach.

Haha ... funny you say this. I watched this for the 3rd of 4th time tonight. And, maybe because I had a release of the dvd with better audio and video ... After tonight's viewing -- I think I finally pieced it all together. I never did fully understand the group of guys killed at the start and the other group involved with Ko.

One question I have is ... Did she end up killing Terrtano at the end? I know he says that she's a bad shot ... but, did his gun end up hitting the target? If not, I'm curious why T (cha) had to take the fall ...

What over-rated dialect? Cantonese may be an over-rated language in Singapore. I think the official language in Singapore is Malay. I think you're not Chinese. Cantonese is Hong Kong and Canton (Guangzhou) language. And Bruce Lee spoke Cantonese and English not Mandarin.

I personally think it's a great movie, I ended up watching it over twice to understand fully of what's going on. The last movie that I ended up watching over twice to fully understand was "The Matrix"

leaving a movie in 20 mins? real serious people / critics stay and watch till the end stupid noobs.

edit why the hell are u even reviewing the movie when u haven't even see it

For the people who reckon this was a great film, do any of you guys speak cantonese or understand Contonese?? Or are you guys just reading the subtitle?? Some of the Cantonese line don't make much sense and sounds like a direct translation from an English script. And then there also the bad acting from those singaporean actors with their bad Cantonese!! That guy kao is just damn annoying!!

reply

the version i saw had no english subtitles.

i was going by the cantonese dialogue. i didn't like the garbled timeline. it wasn't done well (compared to ashes of time). almost seemed like it was there just to waste an extra 5-10 minutes at the end.
