i think this film is about escaping reality. this is why they all lie and this is why she burns her sisters stuff at the end. the reality of her sisters situation is far mor bizzarre than she could imagine. but in the end... there is no concrete reality in the film. lies become real... the clones really do appear to exist. the reality is ambiguous and open to interpretation and based on stories... just like real life is.

If modern day Russia really is as dark and creepy as this films makes it seem, it wouldn't surprise me that people will lie about themselves so they can kind of be somebody else for a short while. I've heard that Russian people have said the film is a fairly accurate depiction of their country. If so, then "4" could be kind of showing the harsh realities while also escaping from them.

Excellent film by the way.
