Exactly how violent / shocking is this?

NO SPOILERS NO SPOILERS. There's no blood, and it's not a horror film. There is death, however the subject is handled sometimes subtly, sometimes abstractly, sometimes a bit more in your face. There is one dead body we actually see. There is a severed pig's head seen twice in the film which may or may not disturb you. People eat a roasted pig like savages. There is nudity both caaual and in one scene possibly unsettling if not comedic. Lots of cussing. Also it's a very very bleak movie. It practically defines gloom.
That being said it's one of my favorite films of all time, enjoy!
