Why four?

Why is there four clones, four sisters, four trucks in front of the thief, four planes, four dolls, etc... If you have some explanations about this very strange but remarkable film, let me know

reply

Maybe it is like the musician said in the bar - four because it is not a holy number in any culture.

reply

yet in japanese the word for "four" is the same word for "death" - namely "shi" - this is why planes flying into and out of japan have no row 4 in the passenger seats

reply

As far as I remember and read about the film, the director told that the film chetyre "four" took four years to accomplish it and that is the reason for the title.
During the production, according to director, they had some difficulties with production that long four years being some sort meaningful aspect and that's why the title ended up being 4.

The screenplay was written by Vladimir Sorokin, one of Russia's greatest contemporary novelists. He said he intended his screenplay to be a metaphysical meditation on the number 4.

Finally, something interesting about this movie. Marina says, "she she," in the bar (subs say sese but are wrong) which is Chinese for thank you. Interesting this word means death in Japanese, given their tension historically.

reply

@as_the_night_is_long.
Actually, the Chinese say 'xiexie', which is pronounced as syesye. The Chinese word for four is 'si' and the Chinese word for death is also 'si'
My guess is that the Japanese borrowed both words and changed the pronuciation to 'shi'
So there is no connection between thanks and death.

k, anyone also noticed this little fact about the dogs?

there are 4 ways shown how dogs can be seen as a part of man's life: maybe dogs are one of the only things people in such areas can still kind of relate to
1. being 'man's best friends' on one hand (for when the human contact seems too cold and meaningless - eg the bum at the end)
2. a way to vent their anger on cuz they're unworthy creatures anyway in some eyes, venting on humans is after all punishable...
3. others use dogs as a way of controling others (guards vs prisoners)
4. while sometimes dogs can be caring for humans who treated them right and avenge them -> dogs eating the dolls that Zoja was kind of forced to make for the old ladies which drove her to her death (in some way)...

also, in the bar, many forget about the bartender which is the fourth person in that scene who also clearly doesn't like the life he's leading at that point. the only thing HE makes up though is that he's not sleeping, so that makes him the fourth liar. insignifacant detail at first but important to round it all up and keep this film consequent to the theme of 'four'.

They aren't just sisters they are quadruplets - this and the perfectly round pigs which are supposedly cloned makes me wonder if Volodya's (the piano tuner)story in the beginning at the bar about human cloning and "doubles" is true... It is interesting that when Marina goes back home for her sister's funeral that there are no other children in the town, just a bunch of old cronies; this seems to add validity to the theory that Marina herself is actually a double and explains her pushing the topic with Volodya

There are children in that town - at the train station Zoya's boyfriend Marat asks the little boy's father to let him make a mold of the boy's face and even offers to pay. If you remember, Marat gets punched in the face.... Why only the old cronies live in that town? Because their husbands either died from drinking or they killed each other in drunken fights. And the yonger people like Marina and two of her sister left town long time ago because there are no jobs, nowhere to go and nothing to do - except to make doll's faces outta bread chewies.....

In addition to what everyone else has written, Vladimir Sorokin's surname is based on the Russian word for forty.

reply

Vladimir Sorokin's surname is based on the Russian word for forty.

Phonetically speaking, Sorokin is rather based on the Russian word for magpie i.e. soroka.

If it were something like Sorokov, then 'forty' (sorok) connection would've made more sense.

Don't forget at the very beginning there are "four" dogs laying on the ground when "four" jack-hammers appear and tear the street up...

Maybe it's so we'll know how many stars to give it? A suggested minimum rating? lol
