Funniest moment ever?

When Gervais is shirking from the actor during the play as he tries to kiss him and Ian Mkellan is pushing his head back. Does anyone else think that this is the funniest comedy moment ever? Its like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and Benny Hill all rolled into one with an extra helping of Wacky Races and a bit of Wallace and Grommit mixed in to boot. Its just brilliant visual humour.

Although, it only just beats the moment when Darren is trying to flush to no avail and then he resorts to using a kitchen utensil to mash it. Amazing.

Idea.

Imagine a sitcom centred around the exploits of Darren Lamb dating. Wouldn't that also be hilarious.

when Andy goes to hit on the woman and the bottle of fizzy water explodes so he stuffs it into his mouth to stop it from spilling. I almost died laughing. Funniest thing I've seen on t.v. since Arrested Development was canceled.

did he just say it was a huge lion?

reply

one of the funniest moments ever...without a doubt.
matter of fact, i had just picked myself up off the floor after laughing myself silly during that scene. hbo ran an "extras" marathon, and that episode was later in the marathon. it was not the first time i'd seen the episode (or the scene), though. i do remember the first time i saw it: my knees buckled, and i hit the floor laughing then, too. when that water explodes from the bottle, and he has shove it into his mouth, while trying to look cool in front of her (l.o.l.)

Every moment with the Agent are hilarious. He is one of the funniest TV character of all times.

reply

Yes Everything about the agent is funny, from his name which is so suited to his character, to his funny face and expressions, to his brilliant comic timing, like the quick cut to Darren leaning in to a spot of Muffin. Brilliant. You've got Andy's non plussed deadpan expression juxtaposed against this grinning cartoon, puppet face nobbling at a cake. Wonderful timing, beautiful direction.

reply

Way to many but im gonna have to pick 2. The part where the agent is getting a phone call in the office and andy is there. Instead of him just picking up the call regulary he has to use his ear pieace and by the time he gets the call the phone hangs up. Also the part where Andy is tryna impress his friends that he can talk to women and the water bottle explodes in his mouth i swear i couldnt breath from laughing so damn much. So many more though

y hello there my name is NUNYA

"when Andy goes to hit on the woman and the bottle of fizzy water explodes so he stuffs it into his mouth to stop it from spilling. I almost died laughing."

Yeah, there were many moments I laughed out loud but THIS one just almost killed me. :)

Brilliant series all in all anyway.

reply

Lol I'm with you there, best part of extras. "Who the *beep* that...."

reply

The water bottle scene brought tears to my eyes. Incredible.

reply

I agree ... any scene with the agent. How about when he was tring to scare the midget, pretending to be Godzilla? Stephen Merchant is hilarious.

reply

I'm very fond of the scene where Andy shakes extra pepper into his soup before plopping his face in it.

I also loved Patrick Stewart's guest appearance: " . . . and her clothes come off, but before she can pull them on again, I've seen everything. Everything." Hee!

reply

I'm only just finishing the first season... you mean there's FUNNIER stuff than the Kate Winslet episode??

WOW this is AWESOME!

reply

agreed on the Patrick Stewart piece. All the stars made out to be abhorrent. I also loved Kate Winslet giving the phone sex advice and the follow up. awesome show.

reply

I busted up laughing upon reading this and remembering that episode. LOL

Blake(Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross): "Coffee is for closers."

reply

Every time Andy rolled his eyes and said "For f- sake" was great...90% of those times where with his agent.

But funnies scene by far was when his agent couldn't understand that the US was 8 hours behind the UK...

When Andy is preparing for Ian McKellen's play and Ian comes into the dressing room and starts talking about the kiss at the end of the play. Andy explains he has a cold-sore and can't do the kiss so McKellen opens the door and loudly calls for some "Vasoline!" with Andy's mates right outside the door after they were telling him that everyone thought he was bent(gay). I had to pause it so I could compose myself and finish the episode. Seriously, how did I not watch this show sooner. Ricky Gervais is a comedic genius.

That was my favorite as well, as many times as Andy tried to explain the time difference. When darren starts counting on his other hand for counting "down" is just perfect.
"My Dark Passenger is like a trapped coal miner always tapping."

reply

My friend wet his bed while sleeping with his gf. It was in highschool on a trip. In a bunkbed. They were in the top one. The girl sleeping in the bottom one wasn't happy either.

reply

Nobody mentioned the part when he walks into his Agent's office and he's touching himself over the naked woman on the pen? lol.

reply

The funniest bit of that skit is when Andy walks out of Darren's office only to encounter Barry pulling himself off! The look on Shaun Williamson's face is priceless!

reply

I like any time where Darren keeps trying to push the many talents of "Barry off EastEnders" -- and he's such a terrible agent that he can't really tell the difference between promoting his clients and degrading them. I love the last episode of Season One where Darren is telling Andy that Barry could play the character on Andy's sitcom; he's like "Barry, do dramatic! Now do your comedy! Now do your singing!" Lol, poor Barry...

Anything with Darren is hilarious.

reply

i liked when chris martin was on and he did the "are we having a laugh" line for the first time. it was hilarious.

and when darren was flushing the poo and using a whisk to mash it. haha

and all of dan radcliffes scenes too

reply

The Clive Owen sequence had me laughing out loud more than I can remember laughing in a long time.

"We'll just smear dung and cabbage on her face then"

reply

One of the funniest things i've seen on tv.
When Andy accidently knees the dwarf in the face knocking him out.

reply

Daniel Radcliffe pulling an unravelled condom out of his pocket and showing it to Andy. And then putting it back in his pocket after retrieving it from Dame Diana Rigg's wig 'Yeah, that'll still be alright.' Any of Daniel Radcliffe's scenes actually. I've never been a massive fan, but he was superb in this. ha ha...to his mum '...and she was trying to have it off with me'!!

reply

The scene with Orlando Bloom when he is trying to convince Maggie that he's really goodlooking. The bit about Johnny Depp is hilarious!

reply

Absolutely. And Andy uses the "hobbit" reference.

reply

Some of my favorite moments in recent television history have been Andy smashing his face repeatedly in the soup and his girdle exploding. I'll never know how Ricky Gervais does comedy so flawlessly.

reply

Oh, yea- The girdle exploding was hilarious!!!

reply

My theory is that he's not just doing comedy. He's acting. :)

The latter is actually performing the role of a character. One of the things that makes Basil Fawlty funny is that he has absolutely no idea how funny he is. He takes himself seriously. That's because John Cleese is acting.

"Doing comedy", OTOH, is just telling jokes and pulling funny faces, and perhaps wearing funny wigs and using stupid catchphrases like: "Are you havin a laff? Is he havin a laff?"

reply

I loved any scene with "Barry from Eastenders" and Steve Merchant. They are hilarious together. I particularly loved the scene in the CarPhone store when they sold the girl a phone and they were dancing to the tones of the phone. So funny.

reply

Remember the letter Darren Lamb was sending out asking for work for Andy? Andy read it out loud and it was like one of those charity commercials. "If you can make andy's dream come true..." lol!

There are a lot of funny moments on the DVD, but I really liked the one with Ian McKellen talking about the precious 'secrets' of great acting. Here was one of the world's most celebrated actors giving Andy the most banal, inane amateurish 'advice' one could possibly imagine. 'Always remember that you're not playing yourself, but another person, and the other person isn't a real person,' and 'don't forget to read what the script says'. That's the 'secret' of the art of great acting according to McKellen as the pompous twit director. I thought it was a great send-up, and McKellen gets top marks for being unafraid of making himself look like a total silly arse.

Ian McKellan's words of wisdom about acting (I suspect it's not far from the truth).
But only just.

reply

Goran: "Here is picture of wife"
Andy: "Oh dear, sunbathing in the nude!"
Goran: "She's dead!"

Can't remember the exact words, but I gave my wife tinnitus at that scene. She was sitting too close.

Extras is totally outrageous. Love it.

Warwick: Do you know why I wear this ring?
Andy: Dunno, you're a hobbit?

1. Les Dennis. Pretty much the whole episode but 'if it's up there I'll give you the money myself' had me crying for ten minutes.
2. Everything involving Darren and Barry (from Eastenders!). As someone else pointed out, that would be the funniest spin-off ever, especially if they brought Robbie along.
3. 'Sir' Ian McKellens acting masterclass. I especially love how he starts by saying 'no titles in the workplace' then does the whole 'Sir Ian, Sir Ian' thing.
4. Patrick Stewart.
5. Clive Owen: *beep* off! I'm Clive Owen, that's mental!'.
6. Orlando Bloom: 'Willy Wonka? Jonny Wanka!'. The hatred in his face when he says it makes it even funnier.
7. Ben Stiller clubbing the old woman.
8. Chris Martin: 'Can we get on with this? I've gotta do AIDS, Alzheimers and landmines this afternoon and I wanna get back for Deal Or No Deal. . .plus, Gwyneth's making drumsticks.'
9. Keith Chegwin: 'Put it this way. If God had wanted a c*ck up an arse, he wouldn't have given us minges!' Even funnier if you grew up in the 'Cheggers Plays Pop' generation.
10. Any scene with Bunny, especially after he came out. 'Now I'm able to enjoy some serious c*ck, guilt free yumma yumma yumma!'

I dunno why the so many people love the Ross Kemp episode. I thought it was by far the weakest episode and Kemps performance was the worst by far. . .

reply

Can't believe no one has mentioned David Friggin' Bowie. "The little fat man who sold his soul" "The little...?" "Little fat man who sold his dreams..." Andy's expression is priceless.

Oh and the agent trying to plug that mobile phone thing in his ear and then losing the call. The timing is impeccable.

hahaha father o'flatley...irish fella. i love millman's sudden foot in the mouth quips. i mean just the fact that he went to kiss the guy's hand shows how influenced he is by on-the-surface stereotypes of people. "aww...condoms, do we need 'em?" lolol

everyone is mentioning the agent, but no one is mentioning his arch nemesis greg! he's such a hilarious foil to millman. everything he says has a sharp tinge to it and what makes it much funnier and more pathetic is that you can it really gets under andy's skin. remember when greg goes out of his way to go to andy's table at the baftas just to gloat about his nomination?

At the graveyard with Andy, Maggie and the wieird lonely man. When they found Andys dead "mothers" grav, and the wieird guy points out that she was a jude, and that she had died on 1960 something. And Andy's "father" still being alive, over 100 years old. LOOL

I laughed so hard and long that I was afraid of overtraining my laugh-muscles!

reply

They just started playing this show in Canada, so I haven't seen many of the eps mentioned here, but for me, the most eye-wateringly hilarious moment i've seen was when Kate Winslet was cupping her breast and miming phone sex behind the pervy boyfriend's back. The whole "my husband's going to be cleaning out my cellar and i'll be polishing his oscar." was just screamingly funny. I laugh whenever I think of it. Patrick Stewart's movie idea was also just too funny... and "you're single, no girlfriend.. and you've never watched star trek? good lord." LOL

reply

Yeah, that was an awesome bit. The look on Andy's face as soon as she says his father is still alive. You could see that he was already well ahead of the group on the faulty math. His shattered response to her was so perfect. Painfully brilliant!

There are many refernces to "say what you see" joke. The most hillarious is in The Office when its Martin Freemans birthday and his mother gives him this cap and Gervais comes up to him and goes "Hat". In Extras of course we have Merchants "Midget remark". Patric Stewart going "I Will make it so" is a classic.
And im surprised no one mentioned the part where Merchant offers those two girls cash if they come home with him.

"I say it, so it must be so."
