why couldn't they atleast leave the name Ahiru in the subtitled version..?
the dubbed version is one thing, no one should watch the show dubbed anyway, but why in the subtitles?

Yes, they used "Duck" in the subs. Since "Ahiru" means "Duck," a native Japanese speaker would see her name as unusual, and associate the story with fairy tales (in which animals are often referred to simply by their species) all the more. ADV wanted to keep the feel of the original story.
However, I do think they should have kept "Ahiru" in the subtitles for purist fans who prefer that name. But they didn't, unfortunately.
And you should watch the dub. It's amazing.
If you didn't understand that Ahiru meant Duck you wouldn't really catch the meaning behind her name, and there are episodes where there are jokes and puns that wouldn't make sense if they weren't using Duck for her name. Ahiru may be prettier sounding to us, but its the word for Duck and usually you wouldn't give that name to your child in either language.

They were meaning the ADV release, not the fansubbed versions. Because all the versions I saw had used Ahiru instead of Duck as well.
