Gullah tragedy

I did my master's thesis on this population. The Island is Daufauskie, the county Beaufort, S.C. Yamacraw is fictional. Why the correct names are not used I do not know, unless it is because the Gullah fiercely guard their culture, although Pat Conroy has not been particularly respectful of that. As I worked on my research, I encountered a lot of opposition and difficulty, especially with oral interviews. The island has been horribly commercialized, with resorts and golf courses, etc, but you can still see the school where Pat Conroy taught. The Gullah were once all over Hilton Head, until the Yankees came in and taxed them out of their land. They have endured unconscionable behavior by outsiders and are extremely distrustful, with good reason. There are the Gullah that appeal to the tourists, which you find all over Charleston and Savannah, and the rest of what is referred to as the Low County, but this is pure tourist B.S. A real Gullah would not be caught dead in one of those restaurants or shops. I hope they can conserve what is left of their culture.
