Escellent point, about the plot being superfluous... What matters is the strong, clear writing and those excellent performances. As long as there are 5-6 great, long scenes rich in character and intense, profound dialogue, then I'm in.
Remember that fabulous scene in Henry Fool in the Hospital after Fay has just had the baby and Simon comes in to tell the new father Henry that his "confession" has been rejected? That is such a powerful moment of transition in the film; Simon asserts himself to his mentor and moves up in status and leaves ehem all behind, and Henry, incredulously, shrinks to mediocrity.
__"You must be pretty impressed with yourself now, Simon; the important new man...You'd be nowhere without me and you know it..."
__"the world is full of s**t"...
__"It's true... The world is full of S**t. And your job is to wade thru it. I'm sorry, but you're good at it. Perhaps I'm not. Go on, leave. Do what you're good at."
Give us that kind of Brilliant writing, Hal. We're all waiting. Hollywood insiders know how great HF is. It's an actors and writers masterpiece. Prove us right. Do it agian!
