Forrestal

I haven't seen this movie. Does it at all cover McCain's experiences on the USS Forrestal (CV-59)and the fire? I believe it was either McCain's plane that was hit by the rocket that malfunctioned. About 150 sailors died in taht fire.

No it doesn't cover it at all. That was one of the reasons I watched this. I was stationed aboard USS Indepence CV-62, a Forrestal Class carrier. I worked on the roof and Trial By Fire, the docu of the fire was mandatory watching for safety reasons.

This was back in '93 when I saw it and at that time I had no idea who John McCain was. While not a huge fan of McCain's, a do have much respect for him. It was his plane that got hit by the stray missile. With that, being a POW for 5 years, heck even the Keating 5 scandal, John McCain can survive anything.

The biggest thing I remeber about Trial By Fire was the line about the Chief Petty Officer who ran towards the fire with a fire extinquisher. When the fire exploded the first bomb, the line in the docu is;
"The Chief with the PKP bottle........is dead". Ouch.

In my time on carriers, there were only 2 minor fires on deck and each time was slightly terrifying. Fire doesn't mix well with ammuntion or fuel. Much Respect and Honor to those who lived and died that day on Forrestal.

RIP Shipmates!

I'm just too stubborn to ever be governed by enforced insanity....BD

The USS Forrestal fire is mentioned, in a flash-back scene, at the bar with the blonde stripper on stage. John and two officers are at the bar talking about it just before they leave and he gets in the Corvette with the sexy blonde.

haha, no he is telling some other exaggerated story about crashing in a pond and says he was able to "forestall disaster" by bailing. he doesn't mention the Forrestal.

it could be a play on words by the screenwriters, but that over-the-top comedic scene would be an odd place for a pun about one of the worst disasters in naval history.
