This was such a beautiful movie. I wanted it to go on and on. I had one problem in that I didn't hear the reason why the mother did not return to India. Can anyone tell me without spoiling the movie for others. I know her daughter said she died, but what from and why did she not go back ?????
I also think that's the case; the abdomen cradling was a tell-tale sign he thought or knew she was pregnant.
In addition, the years add up properly. It was 1983; Samantha would have been born in 1984, and she said she was 22: which meshes exactly with the story date of 2006.
What I'm confused about is why her mother brought a wrongful death suit; we didn't see any anger from her in the film toward Jai about her husband's death. And yet Samantha arrived furious at Jai. I would read the book, if it were not an original screen play.
To answer the OP, Samantha said her mother died in childbirth. She was raised by her grandmother.
Some have said they don't understand Samantha's emotional state; but once I realized she arrived as a wealthy kid with a sense of entitlement, it all fell into place. That gave her the impetus to do what she needed to.
The character made nice progress as the story of her parents and Jai was uncovered, though. She arrived angry due to a misunderstanding and corrected herself.
Jai is a romantic character. I will look for the actor again.
Some aspects of this movie linger; one of which is how it is to wake up in a vehicle buried in sand and to know you are going to die there. That was a revelation. But most of all it's hard to forget Jai.
Personally, I think Jai was not the father; blue eyes are recessive and require the second parent to be carrying a blue gene. It's not impossible, but not probable.
It's possible, but we don't know if the grandmother was maternal or paternal. Would Sara's mother brought a suit about the death of her son-in-law, probably against her daughter's wishes?
