Aside from this being a woman's name, is there something more to it? There's a reference to slavery - is it kind of like the name Aida from the opera, where Aida is a slave?

I doubt there was a reference to slavery. As far as I know, Aicha was Prophet Muhammad's wife, and no she didn't come from a slave background.
I think Said was so offended because the teasing attacked his masculinity, especially sensitive since he's in the army.

Nope. Aïcha is a very common name for girls in North Africa. No religious controversy as far as I can see, they are just mocking the guy's masculinity.

Most people never thought this because they spelled it using a "C" instead of an "S". Also, when the subtitles showed "God Willing(inshAllah)" in Arabic, it was also spelled with a "C" instead of an "S" as inchAllah when it should be inshAllah.

Aicha was Mohammed's last and youngest wife. According to tradition, she was nine when she married him (then in his 50s).
