Horrible horrible voice work.

I don't know if it's just the way it was recorded or what, but it sounds horrible totally amateur.

All the characters sound generic.......it sounds like a cheap VG, you know how the voice work in those always sounds half assed?

And I don't like the computer animation. Love the original, but this is lame.

reply

I didn't think the voices were too bad. Most of the same cast from the series, like what's his name who voices Greg from NEW GENERATION returns.

Just watched this last night. The voice work is SO PEDESTRIAN. I can't STAND English voice work in most Anime, they're all so obsessed with their "voice and diction" lessons from broadcasting school. So few English-speaking Anime voice actors have ANY acting training it's just pathetic. Virtually EVERYONE in this movie, much like every other English-dubbed Anime movie and TV series (except the ones where they could afford to bring in actual Hollywood ACTORS), is frustratingly bland, pronouncing nearly every syllable and consonant with such clarity as to sound NOTHING like actual, real human beings. It must be wonderful, however, to have a gig doing Anime voices, because there seems to be some kind of union protection that keeps the same, bland, whitebread people doing the voices year after year after year. You could find a TON of lesser-known character ACTORS around Hollywood, and in theatre groups in every state in the U.S., who could deliver so much more through their voices. SO MUCH of English Anime voice work isn't acting, it's line reading, probably with little "mood notes" jotted in the margins of their scripts so they know when to be serious and when to be light. Just AWFUL. Obviously, it goes without saying that I prefer original Japanese audio tracks (and even those often feature wooden readings from people who ONLY know Anime voice work), but in the case of SHADOW CHRONICLES, where I have no choice in the matter, I'm forced to listen to yet another collection of sub-par dinner theatre "performers" (EVERY ONE OF THEM) far better suited to voicing 30-second FM radio spots for regional car dealerships and restaurants ("Are YOU in the market for a new car? Come on down to Metro Ford for our biggest savings event EVER!"). Seriously, why DO they even bother with English tracks? Because a few malcontents don't like subtitles? Please. And to think, these utterly average FM lite radio DJ "voices" actually attract fan followings. Sad.

Because not everyone understands different languages, and reading subtitles while trying to actually watch the movie can get tiring.

Do it more often. Get used to it. Soon you won't get tired and you'll learn to appreciate things in the languages in which they were made. As another poster tried to correct me below, I'm aware that this is an American production that probably never had a Japanese audio track, but the fact remains that the SHADOW CHRONICLES cast is comprised of a great many people who do voiceover work on other Anime imports, nearly all of which are as bland and rigid as this.

Not sure if that would happen. Unless I learn Japanese.

I'm very surprised by your posts here. You stubbornly kept arguing with me elsewhere even after you were proven wrong but here you allowed this idiot (Coolestmovies) to get away with his transparently bad arguments which are clearly just him repeating the cliches you see from losers in circlejerk movie/dvd forums.

Then again, this was a couple of years ago so maybe you would've given this idiot more of a fight if the discussion were happening nowadays?

Not that I'm putting your opinion down, but you do realize The Shadow Chronicles was a 100% American production? There is no Japanese version, it was created entirely as a continuation to Robotech.

"You hear what happened to me last night?"
"You got lucky?"
"They put a tracer on me!"

reply

I'm well aware that it was an American production (largely produced in Asia, of course). However, my point still stands, as I'm criticizing English voiceover work in Anime in general

(re-read my previous post -- I said "but in the case of SHADOW CHRONICLES, where I have no choice in the matter, I'm forced to listen . . ." meaning I KNOW this movie only has one track).

The people who did the voices in SHADOW CHRONICLES are the same people who do voiceover work in countless other Anime imports where there are, thankfully, Japanese audio options on the DVDs. So it doesn't matter if it was made in Japan or America; if it utilizes American voiceover performers, the results will be representative of everything I said in my previous post.

However, my point still stands

Hardly. Your opinion is the same nonsense that is parroted by social hermits on circlejerk movie/dvd forums where they pretend to act as if they are smart but only engage in parroting blanket statements on issues like this which reveals they are nothing more than insecure bigots.

There was nothing wrong with the voice acting in this movie. The real problem was the low budget in the animation which obviously is not a problem of the voice actors.
