Any other fans of I Want to Believe?

Don't get me wrong it has its faults, a lot of faults in comparison to Fight the Future or seasons 1-7 (not saying seasons 8 and 9 weren't good just thought they lacked what 1-7 had which was mostly all excellent writing).

Anyway I think I Want to Believe is really good as a TV movie or a two part event (had they done that) but as a feature film it has a lot to be desired. I liked the story a lot but when you are wanting closure well it falls flat.

Anyway just curious if anyone actually watches it every now and again as I do?

Can't wait for Duchovny and Anderson to reprise their roles!! #2016

Yeah lots of people like it even tho it is not perfect. It is fine as a 'super ep' and even as a XF movie. People had expectations that were crazy high.

I still watch it every once in awhile. I like it more now than I did when it originally came out.

Good to know others enjoyed it other then myself.

If you're referring to the OP, based on the number of seemingly positive comments followed by "buts" and "howevers", I'm still trying to decide whether he/she was saying they liked IWTB or not.

The homophobic storyline was a real punch in the gut.

What B.S.!! How come gays can never be the 'bad guys'?!

reply

I think you got it all wrong: the story was not homophobic; it demonstrated the effects of homophobia and repressed love.

IWTB was a beautifully shot movie that dared to show the protagonists realistically, as people who are broken by all the terrible things that had happened to them and who cannot magically be back in the FBI and play superheroes. A thinking person's blockbuster - no wonder people hated it.

I had to laugh out loud when I've read it. That was funny.

I just re-watched tonight and can't believe they made a movie like this.

It felt like a badly made soap opera. Even the main characters were acting with too much calm and tranquility. It was bad.

The story was boring, all about a Priest who is also a pedophile. And they spend 2 hours just looking for one single FBI agent, talking to said priest and that is it...

The series is known for its awesome conspiracy stories, including FBI agents working as AGENTS... Yet we had Mulder and Scully using a big tool and a pipe to hit the suspects? They didn't even have a gun...

What a miserable story.

The best and only fun thing of this movie was them both waving from a boat at the end of the credits.

Be sincere guys, don't kiss ass. This movie sucked! Even if it was a super episode, it would have been forgettable at most.

I am a HUGE x-files fan! Love the show and can't wait for the new series.

Hey buddy , sorry you didn't like it as much as the rest of us did.
Maybe next time.

I just finished watching it. I like it more every time I see it. I'm trying to finish the series and both movies before the new series starts.

This guy right here (points to self). I am a new fan of this film. I avoided it when it came out cuz I heard it was bad but I really like it quite a bit.

reply

Sure! It's a fine movie.

I watched it last night on IFC and think that IWTB makes an fine MOW "special" film (longer running time over the typical episode.) Because it had more time, the pacing was excellent, the discovery (clues), the drama between M & S (picking up on what was going on with their lives) and the action that ensues is allowed breathing time, creating nuance and built up to its conclusion.

The choice to present this case as a feature film was its biggest flaw for the obvious reasons. Expectations were extremely high: most people were seeking closure and answers to the conspiracy and mytharc. Everyone whose watched, or was a fan of X Files expected it to have more at stake. That just goes with the territory of the X Files taken as a whole. The conspiracy/mytharc, whether anyone likes it or not has always been the BIGGER STORY than merely catching serial killers, body snatchers and.or kidnappers. Why? Because in the context of the X Files, the fate of humanity and its extinction is much bigger and greater than all the serial killers and monsters put together. That's what they're working with.

I had heard so many bad reviews of the film that I had never actually seen it from start to finish but had only caught it from the last third of the film.

I thought the setting was fine, most of the dialogue good (except, as they tend to do--give Mulder too much information to speak in one or two breaths.

It's a fine film if viewed as a "special" addition to the series.
