Poor Jeremy Renner!

To be told you're too old (read: look too old, obviously) at 36 to play a 34 year-old, only to be replaced by someone close to a decade older than you!
(From the trivia section:
"Jeremy Renner was originally considered for the role of Robert Ford, but he was ultimately thought to be too old for the character.")

OK, so Brad Pitt's company produced the film, so obviously he had the power to insert himself into what he saw as a plum role, so all that's all pretty moot. Or, probably more likely, the role came first, then the producing aspect.
(Although Brad's showing his age these days, I would say he did just about look acceptable as man in his mid-thirties, especially as they had harder lives back then, and no metrosexual moisturising routines to speak of.)

Still, poor Jeremy, eh?

I hadn't read this in the trivia so you've lead me to something new with your post .

Robert Ford is the character Casey Affleck plays though, who at the start is 19. There's no way (in my view) Jeremy could've uttered that line about him being twenty... well, nineteen actually without a lot of raised eyebrows! Although admittedly he is only a couple of years older than Affleck. I really can't imagine Renner playing Bob! I can't imagine him as Jesse either, but even less so as Bob! But there's acting, I guess, who can say. He is great as Wood Hite though.

Bob Ford is 20years old in the movie,16years younger than J.R.

Even though Renner was only a few years older than Affleck, Affleck does look way younger than Renner so I can see why they chose him over Renner. No way Renner could pass for 20.

That's weird because Jeremy Renner looks pretty damn young actually.

The Town came out 3 years later and he looks 20 something in that
