Was this the WORST movie ever made? If not, what is?

We have a joke in our family: "Just saw the worst movie ever.".... "Oh really, was it as bad as "Mrs. Doubtfire"? LOL! Well, in THIS case I had to say, "No it wasn't!" And, that IS really, really scary! LOL! This movie was by far the worst piece of garbage I think I've seen in a VERY, VERY long while; although, still not as bad as Mrs. Doubtfire. (Again, really scary statement, no doubt!)

What do you feel was the worst movie you've ever seen? By the way, if the writers of this movie are asking us to TOTALLY SUSPEND OUR DISBELIEF, then they could have at least set it in a dream sequence, perhaps. Then at least we could say, "Ahhhhh, thank goodness, it was ONLY a really, really, really BAD nightmare." Now I can truly say I wish I had that two hours of my life back. LOL! :-D Anyway, what do you feel is the worst movie you've EVER seen?

My top two are:

Mrs. Doubtfire
10,000 BC

I'm sure there are more, but in all honesty, I can't think of any others at the moment. ;)

:-D

Listing movies like The Thin Red Line, No Country for Old Men, and The Good Shepherd as worst movies you saw just shows you are a member of impatient MTV generation and prefer movies with music video style editing. I feel sorry for you.

reply

Oh man... Where do I start?

Listing movies like The Thin Red Line, and No Country for Old Men as the worst movies means...(and I agree that those movies are quite bad) that we're not pure conformist "The elite critics love this movie, so uh, I should love it too!" types and have independent opinions.

I don't know anything about The Good Shepherd, and I actually like some of these "worst" movies on posters' lists, but your post - corrosion just shows how much of a bandwagon jumper you are.

Be open-minded, and critical independently of those who tell you what you SHOULD like as far as movies goes.

Jeeeez.

.

Oh, my Gawd.

You people REALLY REALLY need to watch some old eps of MST3k so you know what a REALLY bad movie actually is. "Most Disappointing Movie" is not the same thing as "Worst Movie" -- not by a long shot.

I'm pretty willing to bet just about every single film listed -- both in original and the first subsequent replies, qualifies as far short of "Worst Movie" -- I know, I've seen most of them.

Here's a hint: If the guy operating the camera grasped the principle of "focus pulling", it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If the guy blocking the shot knew how to set up a scene, then it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If the dialogue isn't garbled and unintelligible for about 1/3rd of the film, it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If the film's shots are not constantly jiggling due to the lack of modern steadicam camera, it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If it contains a single, solitary actor who has ever, ever again worked in a film, even in a non-speaking walk-on part, then it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If there are not endless, boringly tedious scenes of dull, uninteresting, washed out scenery passing by, which has the sole purpose of padding out the 40 or so minutes of usable footage and "action" shots to the minimum 70 mins or so required to sell a movie to that late, great institution, the Drive In, then it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If there are not scenes and characters introduced, then immediately thrown away, never to be seen again, for the sole purpose of taking 20 minutes worth of plot elements and expanding that into 40 or so minutes of usable footage, then it's a safe bet -- it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

If the background music isn't some cheezy overused and 5x rehashed Drive In intermission standard, then it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

Now, there is a fairly obvious MST3k venture which is barely watchable even with Joel/Mike and the bots poking endless fun at it -- and that would be the amazingly excreble horror that is...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

=========================================================
DO NOT BE FOOLED by its paltry #28 ranking as the worst film of all time.
=========================================================

Note that ALL the other films ranked purportedly worse are all recent, having been made in the last 15 years, which only goes to show just how many of the votes are made by young punks who have no experience of the vileness which was foist on the viewing public as...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

There are few films which have encouraged so many to claw their eyes out as...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

If you DARE, seek out the MST3k version of that film, so horrible that it could eventually doom all mankind...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Do NOT be so foolish as to attempt to watch it alone, without substantial humor support. Trained Navy Seals have been known to commit unassisted seppuku rather than watch a second half hour of...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

.

In summary: Man, y'all REALLY need to watch more movies. Those lists of yours are really really amazingly lame.

I'll grant you several of them are inarguably lame, like, oh, Sunshine. But at least the basic mechanics of film making were understood by the individuals involved. The various equipment are competently operated, the pacing of the films isn't utterly, totally, irretrievably wretched.

Even things like Sunshine cannot compare to the unadulterated horror that is...
Manos: The Hands of Fate.

.

reply

Sorry to pick on you, but this is like the forth thread I've seen where people have been bashing Sunshine.

In my opinion, Sunshine is a fantastic film-- pretty much anything directed by Danny Boyle is amazing.

Anyone agree?

reply

Yeah, I thought that too when I saw that post. IMO, Sunshine was great.

Especially the pincers... Makes ridiculous motion and noise.

reply

Sorry to burst your bubble, but your arguments only stand on a technical standpoint.

Star Wars Episode IV had lines of dialogues that are plain incomprehensible, soft focus, and somewhat dodgy setups... Yet will hardly ever be found on a " Worst " list.

And there's your sentence that will bring you straight down ot hell :

If the film's shots are not constantly jiggling due to the lack of modern steadicam camera, it's almost certainly not the Worst Film Ever, and not by a long shot.

I for one loathe the craftmanship of Paul Greengrass, but many of his contemporaries like to think he makes good movies. Moreover, some movies in history PREDATE the invention of steadicam, and are OK by me.

The list I dressed up wasn't one of technical aspects, but of contents.
No technical prowess can make up for the lack of brains in a movie.
Or worse : when it does have brains but use them horridly for schock value ( Blindess this year. )

No soft focus or messed up editing will make me come to think that a movie diserves the award for worst film ever done. Amateurish, perhaps... poor most certainly. But the worst movies to me are the ones that had the juice to be good, yet fail on their contents.

That is why I stick to my list.

Everything is going according to plan...B.

You know... I hate people that call it that. The name of the movie is Star Wars. Nothing else. In this instance, maybe it would have been better to say "the original Star Wars," but you never have to throw that episode crap in there.

You are wrong. Lucas changed the title, as he is entitled to do. Originally it had the name 'Star Wars' because the studio didn't want to bind themselves to make more than one movie, should it do horribly.

But Episode 4 dude was smoking his fine briar pipe in the nice wingback chair when he set us straight on the uh, proper title...of course he was in his mom's basement.

It shall now be referred to "That Oldest Star Wars Movie Where Luke Still Has Acne" or something to that regard.

or whatever. I'm flexible.

Relevant Post. Kudos my friend

reply

To me, MANOS is hardly the worst film ever. Sure, it's totally amateurish, the sound sucks, the photography is laughable, and it was made on a bake-sale budget by a guy who knew nothing of movie making. And I dare not call the emoting "acting."

But I will give it this: the plot is fairly cogent. Family is on vacation, family becomes mysteriously lost and ends up at a desert ranch where the dad bullies the caretaker to let them stay the night, evidence begins to crop up that the owner of the house is a mysterious, threatening presence, the family finally comes face-to-face with this demonic character, dad tries to kill him, and in the end we find that the family has now been brought into "the Master's" "family," and will never escape. Then two other innocents stumble upon the place-- and presumably the cycle begins anew.

There is evidence that the ranch appears and disappears, indicating that it may exist in some strange dimension that occasionally opens onto our world.

Anyway, that's my take.

reply

Honestly, if it made it to theaters it's not the worst movie ever. Some of the movies listed, while I may not like, are hardly even close to being the worst movie ever. As most have realized, most people really need to watch more movies or better understand cinema. Only a few people have mentioned real contenders like Manos the Hands of Fate.

However, I still feel the worst movie ever is HOWLING 7! It is an insult to humanity as a whole. It was filmed using the town's people of the filming location for god's sake! And they didn't pick a very good town either. It's supposed to be a werewolf movie from a halfway decent franchise...but what do we get? The weakest werewolf effects known to man, accompanied by the werewolf just being an obvious halloween store mask. This is all on top of the fact that you never see the werewolf 'til the end of the movie. So basically you've got 90 minutes of talking about a werwolf and then a halloween mask at the end. Hell, the film quality is so bad that when they do flashbacks to the previous movies, you see the film quality go up!!! If people think the Matrix is bad, does their brain explode when they see Howling 7?

reply

You're one of the biggest dumbasses I've ever seen.

And I'm not just saying that because NCFOM was a work of genius.

I'm mostly saying it because it's blatantly obvious you've never seen TRULY bad movies. Trust me, if you watch some of the imdb bottom 100 movies, you'll wish you hadn't bothered making this stupid "i'm an independent thinker" post.

I don't care how "independent" you claim to be, if you would put NCFOM below a movie like Alone in the Dark, you have lost your sanity. Period.

If most critics agree that a movie is good, but you say that it is the worst movie ever, you're probably missing something...

If you saw it and gave it a fair chance, but still have lots of good reasons for why you dislike it, thats a different story, but if you saw it once and hate it because it was boring it is kind of unfair to call it "the worst movie ever".

Otherwise I agree. It is important to think for yourself and decide what you think of movies and not just jump on the bandwagon. Watching critically acclaimed movies does not mean that you're going to watch an endless stream of the best movies ever, but its a good place to start. If you watch a random movie on netflix with a horrible rating and don't like it, its probably not worth giving another shot, but something with excellent ratings might be worth the second chance.

It sounds like a lot of people here haven't seen very many bad movies. Most of the suggestions being made for "worst movie ever" are pretty ridiculous. In general, people need to exercise a little more self-control when throwing around superlatives. There are a lot of mediocre movies out there, but that doesn't mean they can qualify for the title of "worst movie ever." Try watching "Crossover" or "Recon 2020", or anything from the "IMDb Bottom 100" list. If you haven't seen any of the movies from that list, then you aren't qualified to comment on the subject of "worst movie ever". Also, examine your own voting history. If the vast majority of the movies you've rated are either "1" or "10", then do everyone a favor and just stop voting.

reply

[deleted]

First of all to all those criticising other peoples style of voting - get a life.

The beauty of film is interpretation. So don't be an elitist ignoramus, and challenge other peoples opinions.

The Good Shepherd I must agree was terribly dull despite critical acclaim, as well as Magnolia, which is the most pretentious film I've ever seen, despite the fact I'm a fan of P.T.As work.

reply

It's funny, many people thought I'd hate Jessse James, and when asked why they told me : " Because you loathe The Thin Red Line "...

Jesse James doesn't have a cinematography that looks like a milk-product-commercial.
Jesse James uses voice-overs to tell facts, not to make 'so-called' points, and overall isn't didactic beyond reason.
Jesse James isn't a waste of acting talents.

...Aside from the music, I don't think Thin Red Line can even compete.

reply

I'll be honest: I haven't seen 10000BC yet, but I do have a couple of nominations for the worst of the worst films I personally ever suffered through:

Alone In The Dark (This takes the bottom 100 spots in my list)
Ultravomit...uhh, I meant Ultraviolet (this is #101)

"Any technology sufficiently advanced would be indistinguishable from Magic."

reply

Ultraviolet was truly an abomination. Not the worst film EVER, but its probably the worst film I've seen this decade. Keep in mind I don't watch crappy pg-13 "horror" films, or anything with "movie" in the title (except scary movie 1 & 2).

Disappointment is much easier to rate than overall badness.

The most disappointing movie this decade is probably a tie between Matrix 3, X-Men 3, and Terminator 3. (anyone noticing a pattern?)

Honorable mention goes to Hitman, Max Payne, 30 Days of Night, and Choke.

However, if Watchmen fails next week it will be a shoe-in for biggest disappointment of the decade. I'm really psyched for that one. Next decade's winner will probably be Invisible Monsters (if it sucks).

reply

I'm going to try a rapid cross-examination of that list of so-called worst bad movies ever seen...
It's 11:30 pm and I had a rough day, so please bare with the informal style.

All I see in " Matrix " is a couple of acne-infested teenagers who saw " Black Mask " and " Ghost in the Shell " over a week end and decided to do the same. The result = a fascist parabola that makes me wonder if they even botehred to think about what they were saying... The battle between Neo & Trinity vs the poor security guards at the end is God-awful : if they're here to save mankind, why do the enjoy killing them so much ? If they don't bother killing human-beings-inside-toilet-tank-that-really-are-batteries, they should just go inside the simulation and kill everyone in sight. The Matrix will die from lack of electricity within seconds. I prefered " Dark City " the year before, that also had the same feeling : digesting various influences into a philip K Dick-ish whole.

My grudge against American Beauty isn't as hard : I salute the overall acting and SOME twists and turns of lester burnham's ordeal. But I found the whole movie uninventing, not daring at all while passing for a social satire. Well, I don't see anything social, every character has a function, I found no human beings in there, with a real life activity. Every single message the screenwriter wanted to give us is given through Wes Bentley... And the MTV-like esthetics is annoying. I don't think anyone actually masturbates to that...
To this, I prefer " Grand Canyon " by Lawrence Kasdan. That shares the notion of midlife crisis, dreams, what is beauty, what is important, etc... BUT where characters have an actual life, not just lines on a sheet of paper, and where the director dares to surprise you.

Minority Retard.. sorry, Report is so flawed in its screenwriting I don't even know where to begin.
Spielberg filmed it well alright, but the screenplay made no sense whatsoever. So why bother ?
The short story was rather excellent and could have been a daring and poignant movie, but NOOO they had to strip it down and tear it appart, losing all sense of intelligence. ONE example : the title refers to the idea that no TWO identical dreams can be wrong, we usually discard the one that has a different version. BUT ALL THREE Precogs have the ability to foresee events. But then Tom Cruise comes with his eyes in his pocket in order to open a backdoor to a place where he didn't even have access when he was a full agent, no alarms go off despite him being Public Enemy #1, he grabs Samatha Morton ( Talent Wasted ) and she agrees to help him ( " hide behind the baloon, wait, go " etc ) just before she tells him " you should surrender. " ( GREAT CHARACTER WRITING right there ), OK I'm jsut writing this as I go, stay with me. So when she's out of the pool, all of the sudden, the 2 other precogs can't do anything at all. Marvelous. The cherry on the cake is when Tom Cruise walks into a trap set by Max Von Sydow THAT never was set in motion ! How did Max start the process ? He whispered " Make a dream please I kinda need it ! " to the precogs ? Utter-Bollocks.

I can imagine someone liking " Le Pacte des Loups "... Someone who's 11 Years old and HASN'T seen any other movie in his life... Otherwise, this is a serious pile of crap. Awfully filmed combats that have no purpuse in the story... Stupid plot of the villains, Postcard-cinematography, Actors taken right out of a picture-novel... Eew, what a treacherous director !

As for " Enemy at the Gate " it is the worst film I ever saw. Raping history in order to glorify the act of war itself, is plain disgusting. Alexandre Dumas said : " You CAN rape history... Provided you give it a beautiful Child ".
Watching all the russians partying, eating pork-sticks-potatoes and drinking the night away before having sex is an eye-widening-insult to what happened in Stalingrad.
I recommand to watch the real Stalingrad movie, by Joseph Vilsmaier.

Voilà. I didn't mean to gripe for so long, but I felt I owed it to everyone who felt I was a cave-dweller lunatic that I can actually loathe movies considered good without bluffing.
AND...There are even more !

Everything is going according to plan...B.

reply

Dude, are you sure you didn't read the title of this discussion board wrong? it's not "best movies" but "worst"!!

Worst movie: Turistas and Grindhouse. NOTHING can be worse than those two movie... if you don't agree, convince me of otherwise!!

reply

Grindhouse? Grindhouse? That's the best you can do. you obviously missed the point of that movie! If that is your worst....well then the movie makers accomplished their goal. It was supposed to be a throw back, a tribute to exploit movies of the past. The bad sound, horrible picture, bad acting, and cheesy one liners is what made this movie fun and entertaining. IMO I found grindhouse well done and appreciated the fact that some people aren't just in it for the money, but to bring what they love to the screen.

Worst movie has to be Crossroads, I'd tell brittney to keep her day job....but she sucks at that as well! LOL

NO WAY "Thirteen Ghosts" belongs on any 'bad' list. Tony Shaloub and F. Murray Abraham in the same movie was a coup in itself! Seriously tho, there was actually a pretty good/feasible story there (feasible if you dig horror). Saw this years ago before Shaloub started "Monk" and loved it then, but once you get to know TS's work, you can go back and appreciate it more. Good story, good special effects, DAMN good make-up, good direction - couldn't really ask for much more. I'm not even gonna get started on "Lady in the Water" as I take quite enough abuse about it, and M. Night in general, on his 'LitW' thread. That was just an awesome fairy tale. Plus, anything Paul Giamatti does is usually top notch acting. That's just the thing about some movies: they're fairy tales meant to ENTERTAIN; and, in "LitW's" case, give some hope to mankind. There are a LOT of books and movies that are great but will be overlooked, passed over, because some people refuse to suspend belief; if just for a couple of hours.

lymphnoder very impressive list. there was just so much crap on it i could choose which one was actually the worst!!!

so really, this movie was not good at all. but to say it was the worst movie ever is a really big stretch, especially after reading that list.

Wang Chung or I'll kick your ass!

Space Camp was the best movie I saw as a kid! Made me wanna join NASA myself :)
And whenever it's on again, it brings up a whole buch of childhood memories.

Worst movies?
Let me think...
All movies with the Olsen twins in it. Or Hilary Duff.

I totally agree with you Buddy. I've suffered hell myself. 10000 BC gave me a headache. And plz dont tell me about good movies. I've seen almost every good movie now. I have my favorites as V4vendetta, Gladiator. In all my life I haven't seen such mutilated direction. It is worthless piece of *beep* Stupid dialogues, Ugly characters, handicapped acting. The brainless Tic Tic. Gimme a break. It was only the graphics that were really good.

Meet the Spartans is the worst I guess! LOL

reply

Wow I see some great movies listed on this thread. You are a bunch of idiots without doubt. The only real candidates for worst movie listed are date movie or meet the spartans.

my .02 = Rollerball (2002) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246894/ It was written, directed, edited by someone with the same disabilities as Helen Keller.

That, and Howard the Duck. That movie was just painful.

reply

Awwwww....'Howard the Duck'? I know it was stupid but is MUCH more entaining with the proper herb added! :p
