Hi,
anybody else here that went to the screening tonight ?
I actually liked the film a lot, didn't really know what
to expect, but since the invitation said something about
a love story, I expected something a lot shallower.
(We were not told in advance which film would be shown.)
The camera-work when she was drunk/stoned was great !

I saw this movie yesterday and think it is really great.

My girlfriend wanted to see this movie 'cause she know the book. So we went to the cinema yesterday... Usually we don't like the same movies - I expected the worst after seeing "The white Masai" two years ago with my honey.

THIS movie was a surprise! Maybe it was because of Rade Serbedzija, who is a really great actor (he played Mr. Milich in Kubricks "Eyes Wide Shut")! Really liked it.

I thought the mivie was rather bad. It is a very self-important piece of film, which leaves so many things sverely underdeveloped.

I have not yet read the book, but I really should because it is said to be very good.

I saw a TV interview with Schrader and she discussed certain details of the female lead character in the film and how it might be different to the book in certain aspects. This made me interested and I wanted to see the movie.

When I saw it then I was very disappointed. There is no depth in the female lead character whatsoever and her relationship with the elder man is never explainde. in fact there is no other explanation than pure passion. The question why she surrenders to this highly abusive relationship is never even touched. Is it an inheritance of her mother, or what?? I guess i can find this in the book...

I also do think that the film suffers somewhat from the fact that Schrader is not from Israel, as she fails to really capture the mood there. This plot could take place everywher. Her attempts to capture some (actually well done) images of well known locations are not enough. The little sub plot with the bus bombings is strange and should be much more prominent and detailed. i guess it was just another attempt to capture the mood of Israel.

"All in all the house is very creepy - so you gotta stay with me! Come on!"

I like the fact that this movie did not explain too much. I expected the contrary.

Pure passion? Why not? People are highly influenced by their emotions.

reply

I agree. People don't always make rational decisions, especially when passion is involved. Throughout the movie I kept thinking "why is she doing this to herself!?" Then I came to the conclusion that Ya'ara probably doesn't even know why. She is just going with it. If she hadn't it, the movie would have been kinda boring.
