Makes me want to punch someone

There was enough in here for a good movie but wow, so stupid in the end. Nothing about this made sense. It was so disjointed and ugh....I'd be interested in the first cut of the film, what they shot as written. I mean....I could list everything wrong with it, but I won't. Oh screw it, I'll list away.

Firstly, what they did well;

The individual characters were decent enough. Thomas Jane was a great pick for his role. I've met the guy. That's what he's like in real life. Kinda tough and kinda soft all at once. Rourke also seemed like a good choice because he was playing a sociopath with something resembling a conscience underneath it. I'll give Joseph Gordon-Levitt points because he looks like he's having a ton of fun in his role. And for what it's worth, someone else could've acted his part out worse. I've NEVER liked Diane Lane and this didn't change my mind.

Okay, so what went wrong;

1) Editing; clearly chopped and re-assembled numerous times because no one scene seems to really connect with another. Sure, the story makes enough sense, but it feels EXTREMELY disjointed.

2) Diane Lane/her character; Diane Lanes characters always come across as idiots; is this her fault? Hard to say. I could see another actress doing what she does in the scene at the office when Wayne is being walked to the car, but the look on her face and the way she said "Wayne", just....ugh. If I saw two gnarly looking dudes walking my spouse out to their car, I wouldn't just walk up and ask them what was going on. I'd call the cops, or I'd find a weapon and try to surprise them or something...Her reaction made NO sense. I know some thick people, but c'mon.

3) Reaction of the cops/Diane Lane's boss; The way they accuse her husband...I know a lot of blue collar people and I've seen all of them wear suits at one point or another. The fact that it's suspicious that an out of work spouse shows up for lunch at their significant other's place of work, while in a suit because they themselves are looking for work is suspect is beyond me. The cops are stupid in this and that boss....Nobody is that big of a tool. And if someone got a call like that and told the cops, it wouldn't end up like that. They wouldn't all just sit on their asses doing nothing about it.

4) Thomas Jane/Diane Lane's reaction to the events of the day seem like "well, it was normal except for that fender bender" not "well, we got shot at and my husband was mistaken for my boss who these guys seemed ready to kill"

ugh....alright, this exercise is getting boring. Y'all get the point.

your the only person that i felt that really understood the things that i felt were wrong with the film. why would the cops accused her husband? that's retarded. i also felt diane lane's character was really wishy washy. she saids one thing but means another. you just can't satisfy her. but then in general, many women are like that.

to me, it seems like many bloggers didnt like this film because it made no sense to them. but most of the reason why it doesnt make sense to them are things that are explained throughout the film. i think they just didnt pay enough attention, and the director didnt make somethings as clearly as he should of.

Watched this again over the weekend, and while I agree with the issues the OP listed... I still liked it. Yes it could have been better, but even with all that it's a good watch IMO.

You are being quite generous to the mentality of cops. I once was working on my car in the parking lot of the hotel I lived in. The cops came up because someone reported me. They asked if I was a mechanic and I told them no, I was a cook. Then they said, in reference to my portable tool chest (about the size of a toaster oven) "kind of interesting that you're not a mechanic and yet you have all these tools".

I guess that was "psychology". They were trying to elicit a response, by making me defensive. Except I was too baffled to speak. How stupid ARE cops? Why hasn't anyone done a study on this? Maybe I should apply for a grant.
