Very Good Movie...But, Wow, Those American Accents...

If it weren't for the placards saying "United States" in front of them, I would have never guessed that the Americans were supposed to be American because their accents were horrible, yeah?

I found it really amusing when in the middle of the summit, the one guy just kind of gave up on what started as a "generic" American accent and started doing an over-the-top Texas thing. Hilarious.

That doesn't take away from the movie, though. It was very well done, and Kelly MacDonald is a heartbreaker, for sure.

Hmm... American here, and I didn't notice a thing. I'll have to watch it again sometime and look for what you're talking about.

It's one of those classic things isn't it, you see an American production and sure thing the British accents sound horrible, you get to the British productions, and exactly the same thing happens.

On the 'generic accent' issue, I would also say that that concept also applies abroad, where English accents are either one of two forms : theatre studies, or Londoner.

The redheaded woman's accent wasn't bad, but you're right, that first guy's accent was a train-wreck. If he was supposed to be Texan his placement and vowels were way off. His accent wasn't remotely recognizably American at all.

I thought so, too.

Haha, yes. That dude didnt do a good job with the accent..

I was eating dinner when the scene in question came up and not watching very closely, but it registered with me that we were hearing from an American delegation because of the accents I was hearing. I didn't see any placards so the accents registered just fine with me.....and I am an American.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

I'm an American and I was doing some work while it was playing, also not watching closely and it hit me right away that there was something wrong with his accent. He sounded like someone trying to hard to sound like an American. It was unnatural. I find it hard to believe it's that hard to find a couple of American actors (even if they want to look in England only) who couldn't have pulled it off.

I think the Canadian lady had a more convincing American accent

So, after seeing this movie, I came to IMDB straight away to figure out what was up with the awful American accents. Really, he did sound American in the strictest most generic way. The problem was that he was borrowing different local pronunciations and mixing them together in ways Americans would never do, and stressing consonants in strange ways. Strictly speaking it isn't like he sounded like he was from anywhere else, it's just that his American accent sounded fake.

I could see how other Americans wouldn't notice much of a problem, I think it depends on how much exposure to different American accents you have, as well as other foreign accents. For instance, I am from the south, so I am used to hollywood botching our accent all the time, but this was bad in a different way.

Oh...if the actor ever reads this - I think you could improve pretty easily if you just decided to go with a more neutral california accent. It was really your harsh vowels and r's that gave you away.

I had the exact same response and SouthernBell does an excellent job of explaining. As I watched the film that guy's accent jumped out at me and I made a mental note to check it out on IMDb. Good to see I'm not the only one.
