This film is worse than hitler

This was the dullest, most pretentious, over rated piece of crap i have ever been forced to sit through. And no, it's not because usually i like to watch films where something blows up every few seconds but because a film to be enjoyable it needs at least one of the following

Witty, well written script

Enjoyable or Clever storyline

Nice visual direction

Exciting action sequences

Girl in the cafe had none of these. What it had instead was an over laboured point about 3rd world poverty and ridiculous scenes with the slowest dialogue ever written. Really its just a film to get attention for the make poverty history cause (a worthwhile one, to be fair)but surely those 10 minute shorts showing actual footage of the conditions these people live in and describing exactly what they go through are far more harrowing and thought provoking than 2 hours of a dull, old civil servant trying to sleep with an annoying scottish woman! And then all those *beep* little conversations (trying and failing to do the tarantino/kevin smith type thing where they talk about mundane topics but it's actually quite entertaining) "do you know anything about rekjavik?"....blah blah "maybe its one of those places that people only know one thing about blah blah"

So to conclude this is an awful film and hopefully will disappear into obscurity sooner rather than later.

I fear you are no more than a a troll, but, please.....

If you think that an "exciting action sequence" makes a good movie, then you've already displayed your ignorance. Your local video store is chock full of horrid movies that have at least one good action sequence. I fail to see how two minutes of action automatically makes a 90+ minute movie good.

Oh, and this movie won the Emmy for best made-for-tv movie.

Oh, and it also won the Emmy for best writing. Now, what were saying about "Witty, well written script" and "Enjoyable or Clever storyline"?

Oh, and it had several other nominations and awards (Emmy, BAFTA, Golden Globes).

No, that poster is only obsessed with Richard Curtis in a very strange way. Look at their other postings.

I realise that you don't like this film and that's fair enough but seriously, you compared it to Hitler.

In my opinion this film was witty and clever and entertaining. It clearly had a point to make but all it was doing was telling the truth and trying to make a difference to the injustice in this world.

However, the film was also a love story. The filmakers obviously decided they wanted this to be portrayed in a subtle, tender and gentle way as this was the nature of the two charcter's relationship; hence, the small, mundane conversations. Have you never been in that situation, where you just end up talking rubbish to someone because you love them so much that you just don't know what to say? These are two mature, fragile, people and their developing relationship was never going to include an action sequence. The filmakers wanted to emphasise the idea that the problem of poverty is real by making the story realistic. If you want car chases and exploding buildings this isn't the sort of film you should be looking for.

I'm not going to undermine action movies and make out that they are any worse than other genres, but personally they are not what I enjoy and so I don't watch them. However, I don't go on the message boards and talk about how they lack subtlety and feature little character development.

By the same token, you should not dismiss this film as bad and 'worse than hitler' simply because it doesn't fit your narrow criteria of what makes a 'good film'. It just wasn't your thing. Get over it.

Sometimes I wish I didn't read message boards.

Are you kidding me? From now on I'm just dying to see a very boring movie, so I can tell my friends it was 'worse than hitler'. Seriously, where else could you find slang like that? Long live imdb.com messageboards! ;)

reply

Long time gone since you wrote this, and you will never read this, but I have to say that I enjoyed your post.

David Yates can direct mate. He's taken the largest (and arguably dullest) Harry Potter book and adapted it into the leanest, most substantial offering so far.

Just because you can't see huge, lavish production values, doesn't mean nothing is going on. Even although we're in CurtisLand, the city's photographed beautifully but also more modestly than in something like Love Actually.

And yes the politics is very aspirational and at times absurd to even ask someone to implement, but it's nice to have an optimist in amongst so much British pessimism.

All in all, a sweet film.

This film is worse than hitler

Perhaps so, but is it worse than hyperbole?

reply

The subject line of the op was just a tad hyperbolic. Just a wee tad. Not that such hyperbole would discount the op's excellent point about the merit of action sequences.

reply

maybe your intellect is worse than hitler's to call such a wonderful little gem crap.

reply

I think as soon as you pull out the Hitler card, you lose credibility.

^I agree. If you didn't like the movie, fine, but comparing it to one of the 20th century's most popular tyrants is taking it a bit too far. Furthermore, the use of the word "overrated" seems out of place. I live in the US, and I know of very few people who have even heard of this film.
