the next napoleon dynamite?

i think this movie is going to make an impact similar to napoleon dynamite. napoleon did awful in theaters when it first came out and this wont be any different, but when some drunk college kids get a hold of this its gonna blow up. thats just one mans opinion.

Actually Napoleon Dynamite did fairly well in theaters since it cost less than half a million dollars to make and made over 44 million dollars.

Hehe.. Someone said this is better than Napoleon.

I liked Film Geek a lot but it's not better than Napoleon. Not with those last six minutes.

I laughed out 4 times at film geek. The headphones electronica music store scene is hilarious.

"There. There."

reply

I doubt it, because this film isn't easy, or fun, to quote. Just compare the memorable quote pages of the two movies...

reply

nah, not likely to ever happen.

napoleon dynamite everyone is cutesy and unrealistic.

film geek is almost as funny, but a lot of the humor is very uncomfortable. and i can't imagine scotty's bathroom behavior will ever be wildly popular at the multiplexes.

I didn't laugh during Film Geek. I just thought about 'Rain Man' and Masturbation the entire film. Anyone comparing this to Napoleon Dynamite (gem of a film) needs to study film more.

oh, and hi phantom!

well, hey r'o'w! good to see you branching out from prometheus :)

i laughed a few times, but they were mostly "should i be laughing at this?" kind of laughs. like the bit where he's hiding in the neighbor girl's closet...it's hahaha/ewww!

i think scotty is meant to be a rainman-type guy with recognizable symptoms (i just can't recall at the moment what my diagnosis is - asperger's? ocd? both?), not just "some guy with social skills so bad they're funny". the actor (melik melkasian) does a great job with the part, and is also fantastic in "the auteur" (in a totally different role).

but comparing film geek to napoleon dynamite...besides the geeky outcast main character everything else about the films is different. they're even different flavors of geek.

I did enjoy the film. On many levels. But I struggle to call it a comedy.

Granted, there are people who don't find "The Big Lebowski" funny at all... But still recognize it as comedy.

yeah definitely. all three of westby's movies i've seen (film geek, the auteur, rid of me) are really hard to classify. i find them all pretty funny (especially the auteur), but i think people expect comedies to be happy and these are some very unhappy movies - they're more about loneliness than laughs.

i didn't think lebowski was very funny the first time, but i've warmed to it after a few more viewings.

film geek has way more of an edge to it and just isn't "likeable" in the same way. still, i think it's an above average film and i know i'll watch it again (especially now that i have to remind myself what the funny parts were). :)

I did watch Film Geek twice. Mostly to see that fine neighbor of his again... what do you think the plastic was for? severe wetworks or something even more kinky/nasty?

heh - i actually invested in the film geek & auteur dvds, something that i hardly do anymore. i pull them out when i want to show that it's possible to make interesting movies with practically no budget.

i'm guessing that it was something nastier, but i try not to let my imagination go there. it was certainly appalling enough for poor scotty! :)

Plastic was there because she was simply a nasty, filthy pig.....basically.
