Title says it all.... IMHO.

I think Steve O would have cleaned up in the role or mabye that guy from friends

Are you kidding? Macy *beep* carved in this role. He carried the movie.
His character is meant to be a weedy white collar white guy who descends into violence and madness, Brad Pitt or Dennis Quaid would have been far too gritty/masculine characters to begin with.

"I like cheese!"

reply

Exactly.

I read the Boston Globe review recently wherein the guy insinuated that Jack Nicholson or Alec Baldwin would have been better-suited for the part - and I don't think he was joking.

reply

I agree...I thought Macy was perfect for this role...PItt or Quaid would not have been as believable as a guy so naive about paying for sex or as the racist beating the crap out of the guy trying to rob him.

AGREE!!! Macy is so underrated it's not funny. I like him in everything I've seen him in.

I'm a people person, just not a stupid people person."Knowies" should already know this.

reply

Yeah - Macy was great in this movie. I don't think he was miscast at all. The way he complains "It's too much" is just perfect.

I don't see Brad Pitt or Dennis Quaid being even half as good - at best it would have been a different film.

reply

Macy's perfect for the role. The whole point of the movie being the barbarism that lies within us all, especially nerdy, straight guys that have been pushed around all their lives.

reply

I thought he was perfect casting. But who else did you have in mind?

you're gonna think i'm joking, but I honestly think Tom Hanks woulda been awesome in this. Kinda goes against his nice guy image..

reply

how about Gilbert Godfried (spelling ???) or Carrot Top ???

reply

Carrot top would be great :D hahhahahaha

couldn´t agree more.

Bill Murray, Jim Carrey...damn, Martin Lawrence would have been perfect for this role.

I disagree completely. This was the best work Macy have ever done. Giant career defining stuff.

I also disagree! I too thought this was the perfect role for Macy! I absolutely loved it!

reply

Indeed, this is easily some of Macy's best work. He is perfect in the role, and obviously has a major grasp on how to do Mamet's dialog. I recently learned that Stuart Gordon was the first person to direct Sexual Perversity in Chicago back in the 70s, so this movie was made by kind of a Mamet "dream team". I think it's a travesty that an excellent film like this didn't get more positive attention, and the same goes for the amazing "Stuck", which Gordon did last year.

William H. Macy is perfect in this role (and in almost everything -if not everything- I've seen him)! He's a thespian, he really has a great range.

Brad Pitt would never fit the role, the character was supposed to be 47, Pitt is only 44 :)

i can't believe someone suggested dennis quaid for ANY movie.

reply

Agreed - Quaid is a bit of a hack, let's be honest. You could never accuse Macy of that.

Pitt is a great supporting actor (Twelve Monkeys, Burn After Reading), but name one movie where he's carried it as the lead.

Jack Nicholson was past it a long time ago! Like Pacino, he gave up acting a long time ago to become a pastiche of himself.

reply

thanks for backing me up on the quaid thing, but you could make the arguement that pitt at least shared the lead in "fight club", and he did pretty well there. a lot of his supporting parts are so great, that i forget they're supporting roles. he kicked ass in "snatch", and he definantely wasn'the lead there. i can see what you're saying though. i ahd never really stopped and thought about it before. i haven't seen "benjemin button", but i hear he's pretty good...

I agree there is no film that he's 'carried' by himself. But: Kalifornia (1993), Legends of the Fall (1994), Se7en (1995), Fight Club (1999), and The Tree of Life (2011) are all excellent performances that qualify as more than simply 'supportive' roles.

Jack Nicholson was past it a long time ago! Like Pacino, he gave up acting a long time ago to become a pastiche of himself.

I think both actors did their best stuff in the 70's, but Jack was still in top-form for 'Reds' (1981) 'A Few Good Men' (1992) 'The Crossing Guard' (1995) 'As Good as it Gets' (1997) 'The Pledge' (2001) and 'About Schmidt' (2002). The guy is almost 80 years old now, cut him a break.
Pacino on the other hand, has mostly gone downhill since his younger days. But he was fantastic in 'Donnie Brasco' (1997)
