I really wanted to like this.

But I did not enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I would. The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain are three of my favorite films (all written by Anthony Minghella) so naturally I thought I would enjoy this too. While I did think the acting in this was good (specifically from Wright-Penn and Binoche) I found myself bored for the majority of the film which rarely happens to me because I love slow films. I didn't hate the film but I can't say that its something I will ever watch again. Just my opinion of course.

The Weinsteins appear to be giving (small)blank cheques to those people who built them up at Miramax but they all seem to be misfires. Clerks 2, B&E and Grindhouse to name a few. In my opinion the only good movies the new Weinstein company have made so far are Derailed and 1408 ,both of which were made with a Director that didn't work for Miramax in the past, Mikael Håfström.

Pass it on.

I had no idea what to expect when I put this movie on the other day - so I was pleasantly surprised. A great story, spoilt only by a rather silly ending but that didn't affect my view that I had enjoyed watching a movie where I couldn't predict what would happen next. Interesting settings and characters, with a real life modern day (not mundane) work environment.

Ray Winstone and the Prostitute were fine cameo parts. Modern London and its development made for an interesting background for me (an ex-pat) to see how my old haunts could be developing.

Jude Law, as always, so REAL on the screen. A great film, great acting and a great story, spoilt only for me [SPOILER WARNING] by the implausible reluctance/fear of Jude's character to attend the 'restorative justice' type element of the boy's sentence. Probably done to build some fake sort of suspense ending?! I don't know.
