i just saw breaking and entering.

i just saw breaking and entering. what a lovely film.....it's like poetry. each actor does such a sensitive job. it's too bad it hasn't had wider release. i can't imagine that all the public wants to see are films you don't have to think about. when i think of robin wright, juliette, and the children. each character fits and jude's vulnerability and despair shows so deeply on his face in this film. if a wider audience could see it i know they would enjoy it. i've never seen jude in this kind of role but he captures dead on.

im sorry but DID u watch the same movie i did?

Finally ¡¡, my expectations were high, I've seen so many B&E trailers, so many videos with Minghella explaining the essence of the film, that I was really prepared for what I saw, and what I saw I liked very much. It's an strange and beautiful movie, of those that remain in your head round and round, and make you think about the Liv's generosity, Will inmaturity and how easy is to manipulate teenagers. It hurts how Will life is so out of affection, how desperatly he tries to be loved by Liv and her daughter. And how generous is Liv on lying on Amira's son to save Will. The final scene could have been more dramatic, but it's an exercise of self contention by all people involved in the bulgrar incident. All of then lying, trying to save theirselves and the others from disaster.
I barely could recognize Jude Law, except when I looked at him at the eyes, and the mouth. Excepting for the street kiss to Amira, and the not talk scene, sometimes he lacked intensity. But his look says everyhting about the suffering he (personally) and Will (character) are going trough. He's saying desperatly: love me, kiss me, want me....to Liv, to Amira, to the hore...I think that finally he found a balance on his life(Will). Certainly, I liked much more this last performance that the one he did in AKM. The harsh reality of inmigration is well focused at the movie, as well as the ambientation at King's Cross. I liked particularily the house Live&Will were living, so white, so minimalist reflecting the neatlyness of their relationship or rather the non passion, not a thing out of his place.

We should bite more often, he says. I think the same.

Not a great movie, but a good one.

May I disagree with you on this? I doubt a lot that the movie is meant to be beautiful. On the contrary, I think it's meant to be awful, just like life for many people actually IS.

You say "Liv's generosity", where in the movie did you see that? "Will's immaturity" - what do you mean? I thought the man was mature enough to look for the love he wasn't able to get at home somewhere else!

I believe the final scene is dramatic enough. & ugly.

I thought Jude Law looked very tired - perhaps even more tired than I am these days - & weird, I don't know if it was intended or not. I didn't like it & I don't think what he lacked was intensity, but rather some good nights' sleep.

Immigration is something I think this movie could have placed more focus on. After all, the colors, the lights, the "plot" seemed to be oriented towards it. Still, something was lacking.

I don't know what to think of this movie. I still wonder whether I should consider it ok or not! It's like the director & the producers couldn't decide if they wanted serious stuff or just something entertaining! :-|

"Laughter is the closest distance between two people." At least they got that one right!

"Why not hardcode the reaction parameters?" "Well, yeah, of course... It is possible."

I loved the movie.
Really.Loved the way Minghella deals with this "Ok story".
Law and Binoche are both excellent.
Binoche definitly deserved to get a supporting acting nomination to the oscar for this role.
She performs her part heart and soul. She is such an alert actress.

reply

i just saw it, not too good for me... the plot is weak, too many complicated characters, not great performances, even law´s character is the same as the one he plays in closer! not bad but not worth spending your time...

reply

For me, Will and Dan aren't the same

reply

I've watched both films and it never occurred to me that Will and Dan are the same. I saw them as two completely different people -- different backgrounds, motivations, outlooks, stations in life... They have one thing in common, that is they cheated on their significant other. But that is one action; one action does not define the whole character. To say that it does is supremely superficial.

reply

He was supposed to be tired in the movie, remember? Bea was keeping them awake at night.

reply

Come on! He can't've been supposed to be SO tired! The woman was actually more into Bea's problems than him & she looked a lot better!

Dulce-Mirita:
I do agree with you. It was a wonderful film. What I mostly enjoy about Minghella's direction is how he focuses on the characters. He doesn't get wrapped up in plot progression. He wants the viewer to have a connection with the characters, irrespective of their race, social status, sexual orientation or whatever the situation. That takes years of directing a strong sense of the human condition to do.

Also the filmography and music were exquisite and rich.

reply

i think as well it was a very sesitive movie, not like feelings in an ordinary romantic one.

reply

Loved the movie. It was a different kind of movie. I was affected by the story
and how our lives, loves and possesions are broken and entered and nothing is the same afterwards. I love Juliette and I think both Juliette and Jude gave magnificent perofrmances.

I guess we all look for a different quality in a movie and this love story did break me and entered my soul.

I personally LOVE this movie. Yes, yes, I am a Jude fan...Jude lover really! I love him like no other.

But this movie would have been lovely, even if he wasn't in it. It's very complex, I think. I think it tells a story of everyday life, really....you're in a committed relationship, but eventually it loses something. You start to look around to find something else to fill you up...when you really should look at what's right in front of you.

The scene where RWP stands up for the boy, was amazing, I thought. That is where she was so giving...and then when she storms away from Will. I thought it was done beautifully! It really catches you up in the moment!

All of the actors did an amazing job! I give this one an A!!

nathalisandra,

1. Daughter is autistic
2. Sunbox is to help symptoms of depression
3. Martin's relationship? What can I say, he's attracted...? Plus, Minghella wanted to highlight the cultural diversity of the city.
4. Vera sits in the car because she is cold, maybe between, er, "jobs?"
5. Law bought her the same perfume his wife wears because she smelled Vera's regular perfume on him the previous night she sat in the car with him...so this was pretty safe, if wife smells perfume, it's her own...man trick, I guess.
6. Binoche also works somewhere where it looks like they are playing bingo or somthing, so she doesn't just earn money doing tailoring. Also, perhaps there is some kind of government assistance program (?) that would help with some of their basic needs...?

to nat ajforever,

I wish I had the dollar back that I spent at the dollar movie, as well as the 2 hours I spent, watching Talladega Nights!

I hated this movie. I wanted the kid, Bea, to die in the end -- she was insufferably annoying, spoiled beyond all comprehension.

I wanted the other kid to go to jail for what he had done. If he had been my son, they would have sent him to Rikers, period, never to be seen again.

Jude Law was about as cinematic as a tennis ball.

Robin Wright Penn was lifeless, dull, a prat -- and completely soul-less, vacant. And she looked horrifically thin. Jesus, Robin, go eat a hamburger!

The only saving grace -- the woman who played the east european hooker, and as always, the luminous Juliette Binoche. I have never seen her in a film where did a bad job.

reply

Yeah, I know, I don't know why they didn't put more car chases and explosions in this movie...or some superheroes...or aliens...instead of presenting us with something that we have to think about to "get"...geez, I hate to think...I also like my books with lots of pictures...

You do know sarcasm when you hear it, right?.

reply

Have you been to the Upper East Side of NYC? You'll see a TON of women like Robin played in this film- high-class, rich, thin, blonde, aloof, etc. Some guys REALLY go for that type of woman, esp, in the upper echelons of society. Think of the Gwyneth look/style also. Juliette is juxtaposed w/ RWP b/c she is full of energy, laughing, and curvy. She's more "real" IMHO, not some lady up on a pedestal that is unreachable.

reply

"I wanted the kid, Bea, to die in the end -- she was insufferably annoying, spoiled beyond all comprehension."

The girl is supposed to be autistic. She is incapable of acting "typically". That is part of her character.

You must be really ignorant if you cannot comprehend that.

It's hard to believe we can all watch the same movie and come away with such different perspectives. I thought the movie was exceptional. The acting was superb. The anguish was so well portrayed. I would put this in my top 100 movies of all time.

reply

You can argue the merits of the film as a whole either way, my missus thought it was crap but I thought it was a decent effort at examining poncy middle class London life (well Jude Law's anyway.)It was a bit scenes from a marriage, though that's not a complement, Minghella does drift between Ingmar Bergman and Sydney Pollock but give me the epic every time. But my main issue was what the bloody hell was Martin Freeman doing in there, I'm pretty sure that Richard Curtis snuck in to direct the bits he was in, I can't stand those self depreciating plain unassuming well meaning just hasn't met the right woman arse holes that crop up in Richard Curtis films, was hugh Bonniville not available-twat.Ray Winstone brought some life to the film but the character was utterly unbelivable, if that scene in the court house was a hollywood movie we'd all be standing up shouting-bollocks! Sean Pen's wife was good though.

i thought it was because he wanted to be able to be that close to his girlfriend to be able to talk to her.
she is his girlfriend not his wife at the end he tells to though him out in a sense and at last he ask her to marry him

and its agreat movie worth thinking about it for days
