very disappointing film

POSS SPOILERS BELOW

I have just seen this film ... and in my humble opinion it is not very good.

What begns as plot, where Jude Law's firm gets a break in and the second time it happens, he gives chase, the film does not continue as the thriller it promises to in the trailer

It becomes one of those disfunctional mid life character study films about relationships...Jude law is not happy in his current relationship, so begins another relationship with ANOTHER miserable character ... and so every one is miserable...

it is shot just like every 'serious' drama is shot these days, with hand held camera work, which to be frank, as a style, is very dull.

To add insult to injury, when the film wraps, it takes the view that everything is going back to normal ... it's ok to cheat on your girlfriend, if, as an apology, you propose to her!!

I ended up groaning through most of this film (what was the point of the prostitute character?) ... and since it was a film that was put forward for the current BAFTAS, and it has received no nominations, then the film industry agree.

THANK YOU

this is exactly , but really exactly wat I was thinking and reading the rest, it seemed I was the only one. It began so good with the break ins and the little architectural aspect, and the dynamic jumping buildings and everything,
and then just dullness.

You obviously went into it expecting it to be something it is not. However, I think you lack the depth to truly appreciate this movie anyway. Too bad.

This movie really irritated me. God, I wonder how many script rewrites this movie went through in order to end up at the final sappy unbelievable ending.

I don't understand Law's character emotionally. Dissatisfied with his home life he begins an affair with a Bosnian Muslim woman because.....well, if anyone can finish that sentence feel free. Because she's a really good tailor and she has a cute accent??

1. Binoche's character sleeps with Jude as a quid pro quo to save her son but doesn't communicate this up front with him. Why not? Jude Law knows that Binoche's character is a Muslim woman and yet doesn't ask himself why she would agree to casually sleep with him.

2. Binoche takes the laptop with her on their first intimate encounter but doesn't (??????) give it back to him, instead she brings it back to her apartment thus continuing to endanger her son with the incriminating stolen evidence.

3. Jude Law initially refuses to go to the boy's police hearing even though Binoche obviously is not going to tell the police about their relationship.

4. Jude Law claims that the laptop recovered from the boy was brought over to the mother's apartment by Law and loaned to her. But Law earlier told police it was stolen during the first break-in of the office, therefore Law is guilty of making a false statement to police; apparently the police don't care and this is glossed over????

5. The DNA match of the boy's blood from the office is explained by Law as occurring from a cut while the boy was visiting the office. However, we were shown the boy cutting his hand on the boarded up roof window during the last break-in attempt. So the police buy the story that the boy cut his hand during an office visit to the roof of the building??? Are you kidding me???? This discrepancy is glossed over.

6. The other boy who was arrested with Binoche's son; what happened to him? Is he left dangling in prison because he didn't have a mother who slept with Jude Law???

7. We aren't shown Law actually confessing to Robin Wright Penn his infidelity but when we see them together again she seems to be taking the news really well. Penn shows up at the police hearing and helps Law embellish his lies thus helping the boy. She still seems to be taking this really well. On the drive home from the police station, Law remarks, "What you did back there...you gave that boy his life back." Suddenly Penn flies into a rage, gets out of the car, exclaims that she doesn't want Law in her home. WTF??????????

8. Law proclaims his love, promises to marry Penn and she forgives him on the spot. Yeah, like marrying her is going to smooth over his cheating and make it easier to raise their autistic daughter. Good Grief!!!

9. The Serbian mobsters who were controlling the stolen goods operation. What happened to them? Aren't they supposed to rub out the boy who was released from prison to keep him from talking or in retaliation for whatever deal he made with police to get released? Or did they just get written out of the script to keep the ending upbeat?

unreconstructed, this list just made me laugh really hard. It's amazing how many head-scratchers were in this film when you tote them up.

No way he could be happy with a seamstress? But if she had stayed and they had gotten together is a real relationship she would no longer be a seamstress she
would have reeurned to her music and her piano. Why would she need to fix
strange men's clothes? But Liv challenged him when she ran out of the car and
we do not see his recourtship of Liv but we see its product (her belly bump)and he stands there with a face full of pride and smiles. Amira will be totally
forgotten and life goes on. Hopefully all will be well and this unfortunate
affair has accomplished much for Will and Liv, but not much for Amira who now
goes back to Bosnia with her son but actually she has already told us earlier on
that that's what she wanted to do. So upon examination, what looked like just a
simple happy tie up for the picture is a complicated true solution for the
problems of the protagonists. Job well done Anthony.

This movie grows on you. Keep wtching the DVD there's lots to learn.

I actually liked it, am I the only one who did? I have only watched 3 movies with Jude Law in it, sense to tell you the thruth I never really liked him,but he was good in this movie, I saw him in Cold Mountain and then I couldnt watch him in another movie before The Holiday, and then untill this movie came out.So I guess it is every 2nd year I can watch a movie with Jude Law in it.

I totally agree with the guys above...
In my opinion Jude Law's character was just totally unbelievable - I could not relate to him at all.

For example the prostitute - why didn't he just tell her to f.u_c.k off? Even after his wife cought him with the parfume odour of an other women on him he did see her again...
Trough the whole movie I was just like "WTH, why is Law doing this??"...

Another plothole is the fact that Jude Law's character was able to catch the boy at all - or finding out where he lives. After all the boy was excercising every day and was quite a good climber etc...

And while I'm at it: How the hell did his car get back? Did the prostitute bring it back? Why, and why did they make it look as if it had anything to do with the boy getting arrested?
Or was the car stolen by the boy's gang and not the prostitute? Then how did they know about the thing with the fox??

Please excuse possible spelling mistakes, I'm not a native speaker.

I agree with you. I am irritated by posters who slam others with statements such as "you are obviously immature..." "don't know what you're talking about..." "have no idea what good cinema is..." Opinions are just that, opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own, and to belittle someone who has a different viewpoint simply discloses the immaturity of the flamer/poster, and is a waste of time.

I think of films such as "L'Avventura" or "The Double Life of Veronique" (character studies at their hearts, which, despite the disjointed plot, "Breaking and Entering" attempted) and wonder why I bothered to watch this film to it's conclusion. I suppose I stayed with the film because I enjoyed the score, cinematography, and a few isolated scenes. I kept waiting for "Breaking and Entering" to get better but no such luck, which was a shame, considering the talent involved. Hey, "The Big Lebowski" is a FAR superior film, although the two cannot be compared side by side. This film certainly isn't "the worst film I've ever seen," (I have no idea what film that might be) but I did find "Breaking and Entering's" screenplay and direction rambling and confusing, as if no one knew what was supposed to happen next. The film was a disappointment.
