Absolutely stunning.

This film is a true masterwork, and I can't believe I've lived without it until now.

It's rare to see a medium completely reinvented, old technologies and constructs flipped completely upside-down and inside-out, and this film really does that. It's such a visceral experience. You feel this movie more than you understand it, which is often frowned upon, and perceived as "meaningless". Not so with this.

Granted, there are things we can never fully understand, due to the extremely personal nature of Maddin's story dealing with childhood issues, but I think the film is quite easy to follow on a thematic, symbolic level. I really connected with a lot of the family dynamics and religious connotations throughout.

If there was a film record on one's own subconscious, it's "Brand Upon The Brain!"

Whether or not that intrigues you is something else. For me, there's nothing better.

Thanks for the intriguing review. I just saw My Winnipeg and loved it (my first Guy Maddin movie), so I look forward to seeing Brand Upon the Brain. It sounds fantastic.

"My Winnipeg" was my first Guy Maddin experience as well, and I saw "Brand Upon the Brain!" in class yesterday and was blown away.
