Could it be made today?

Social media has made our already small world absolutely tiny over the last few years. I bet this movie couldn't be made today with our iPhones, Facebook, and Instagram. The jig would be up almost before it started.

I bet you are right and the movie is not even that old. Amazing how much our world has changed since this movie was made.

People are still making these types of movies/shows today. Bad Grandpa and Nathan for You being two big recent examples. Obviously they could not make another Borat movie since everyone already knows who Borat is and Sacha has acted in a fair number of Hollywood films since then, but I don't think the sub-genre is dead yet.

Actually, I was watching Ali G Rezurection, and before it became obvious that it was just clips of the old show, I was wondering how he could be able to pull off anything when everybody is already aware of his three characters (of course, I imagine some of the stodgy old people he interviewed may still not know).

A farce like this could definitely be made now. Social media may be widespread, but it is limited to groups of people who want that content, and broadcast media is splintered into increasingly diverse demographics.

Do a prank on one street, and everyone may know you, go to the next block and you may cause a riot.

The society seems to me to be increasingly conservative these days. People like my nieces and nephews don't understand things like black humor, and sarcasm, that were commonly enjoyed years ago; they just seem shocked and confused. So, there are plenty of targets out there for a Borat style attack.

Daily newspapers are disappearing, and news is distributed via the web in a miserly way. The world is getting smaller, in spite of the hype,

Well I'm 27, I wouldn't necessarily agree with this... I'm a child of the 90's and grew up much longer before social media ever existed. I love Borat and seen it when it came out, so I get this style of humor. But I would say people maybe under 20~, because now you are getting into people born post 2000, where internet was very common and most kids grew up on broadband with 24/7 internet access.

I'm young and probably the exception but I know what you mean. Political correctness is a cancer. People don't realize that not talking about uncomfortable taboo issues isn't going to solve them.

A better question for the ages is could a movie that was actually funny, like Blazing Saddles, be made today?

Of course not. Americans have no sense of humor anymore, they're too afraid of offending everyone.

why do conservatives think that being offensive is such a great thing? Offending people is bad manners; it is wrong.

You must be the life of the party..

Don't forget he made Bruno that was released in 2009 when Facebook and twitter were on the rise, he also made the similar in style The Dictator in 2012 that had no leaks and such. Production companies are very smart on knowing how to keep their projects secret. A good example is the new Star Wars movies being made, everyone wants to know what they are filming but it's top secret stuff!

needs a re-make!

but who 2 play lead

Matt Gubler?

that'd b Nyo
Kewl!

Gelebt haben. Zu sterben, um wieder zu leben.

Why would social media limit Borat if it were made today 

reply

Yeah, I'm failing to make the connection too.

someone above mentioned the dicator. That film is not a mocumentary, it is entirely scripted like just about every movie hence why it has actual actors playing roles such as John C. Reily, Anna Ferris, and Gary Shandling. Borat and Bruno (supposedly) had scenes from their homeland scripted but Sacha Baron Cohen and his sidekick Azmat/Lutz acting in the USA with everyone else unaware and thinking it was a documentary.

It would be harder but not impossible to make a film of this magnitude but I don’t believe social media is the biggest hurdle, the general popularity of Cohen would make it difficult not to spot him.
