Boring, predictable, and most of unoriginal (spoilers)

I'm italian, and I've seen many italian movies in the past years, and this my friends was one of the worst. The script is totally unoriginal as the viewer is taken on one of the most unimpressive rides ever. There is nothing original in it whatsoever, the whole development of the story is slow and predictable, with the director giving you hints so big to what is going to happen that you lose the will to keep watching. For example when Alessio Boni's character meets the new girl on set it is soooo obvious that he is going to sleep with her. And guess what, he's with her when suddenly the phone rings, and who could it be but Giovanna Mezzogiorno! Boring, boring, and predictable. Normally with these actors, some of the finest italian actors around now, I would at least save the acting, but no, even in this department the movie goes nowhere beyond mediocre. I don't know, maybe I've watched too many movies, but I can't help it, people need to know what a waste of time this film is. Please don't watch it, you'll save yourself having to go on IMDB to warn others!

Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played girl bunny?

reply

It wasn't that bad, Tex.

reply

I am not Italian, and I don't think it is 'that' bad. It is predictable but not boring, because I find the actors and actresses likable and watchable. The story and characters are kind of soapy but their emosions touchable, and moved me.

I love Italian movies!
Even if it was not the best one of the last few years and it's not to be compared with Fellini or Pasolini either, it's nevertheless a nice European movie, which is thousand times better than lots of Hollywood crap!!!
By the way, the movie even made me cry at one point, which is a good sign I suppose!

The cinematography is beautiful.

So many movies, so little time...

while watching this film i got a feeling , how predictable this movie was
there was so much spoken rather than felt ...the screenplay was the most contrived screenplay i have watched , it was a mish mash of very many films .....still it did not make for a bad viewing , there ae hardly any good movies around ...very predictable and contrived . the lead actress is very good.
i had seen a film set by mira nair set in india called monsoon wedding, ...does anyone see the similarities?

reply

This movie was predictable but not boring.
Both this film and monsoon wedding have pedophilia as a central theme. While I was watching this, i was thinking about a friend(male) who had this same tragic experience from his father and both his parents were teachers.

This movie is EVERYTHING but boring. So what if it is somewhat predictable? Unpredictability is not the only thing that counts when evaluating the quality of a film.
Personally it made me cry and I felt many strong emotions. It was very , realistic, dramatic and touching. Giovanna Mezzoggiorno is an extremely talented and beautiful actress. For people who love quality cinema, drama and passion this is one movie to watch!

I tend to agree. For me the predictability provided some relief from the tough subject matter (incest, abuse, rape, infidelity.)

I´ve seen far worse movies produced by Hollywood, perhaps "La bestia nel cuore" isn't the finest example of modern italian cinema but it's not that bad as most posters have already expressed.

IMO The critical flaw resides in the sub-plots that aren't really fully developed, yet they distracts us from the central story.
i.e the love story between Emilia and Maria is enough interesting to show it in a separate feature film.
I think this movie should have focused more in Sabina and Daniele tormentous childhood and how it affected them in their adulthood, That would make the movie more effective and about 25 min. shorter.
