Oh gosh! (spoilers) - series 2 episode 3

They have killed off Gil! How tragic was that! I was hoping he would return if there were a third series. Impossible now :-(

I know! When she put the picture back together, I thought 'Nooo, they've killed off Gil'. I always hoped he might come back.

Can't believe it. I feel so depressed now!!!

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

So what now for Alice?

Was a great episode though :)

Rocky: Because I can't sing or dance.

Terrible decision in my opinion. They should have left it open for him to return. For me this series is simply not working as well as the magical first series.

Yes never thought of that. Maybe he had a nasty accident but is still alive :)

The song playing pretty much confirmed his 'death', something about "my lover's gone" or along those lines.

I've never been this frustrated before regarding a TV show!

I'm just glad that wasn't the last episode of the series, so Alice might still meet someone... Imagine ending the series like that!!!

Apparently she starts a relationship with a writer played by Mark Heap, still - they should ahve left it open for Gil to still be 'out there', it's wrong knowing he and Alice will NEVER meet now!

You don't actually here that he has died, you are just making assumptions. He was an American, who might have had a family crisis and had to go home for example. You never know, he might return. I got to admit, both myself and my wife think it is missing something without his character this series.

reply

I watched the episode again on demand and you just hear the guy in the car say 'Sharp Pain' when he is telling Alice about why Gil couldnt' make it.

hmm....

I am gutted! I actually got a bit weepy, that was soooo sad!! I don't know why they got rid of him this series, anyway. I still like the show, but I loved the Gil character just as much as Alice.

reply

The song could have a dual meaning.

We don't know what was said and it's unlikely we won't for some time, considering the nature of Love Soup's writing and plot. Who'd have thought in the first episode picking up a spoon would mean so much, eh?

Also, 'my lover's gone' can mean death, sure, but it can also mean they've simply gone away.

That's not to say he hasn't died, but it would be tragic if that were the case. Although it wasn't them together, they had good chemistry (it's stupid when read like that, but it makes sense) when on screen and being right for one-another.

However, if he is dead...BBC White City, picket fencing and megaphones. 'Nuff said.

reply

Maybe they killed him off because we knew they were right for each other and so would not accept her with someone else while we knew he was out there somewhere???

I love Michael Landes and whilst I too am hopeful they didn't kill off Gil I think we're fooling ourselves. Bo**ix anyway - I was hoping he'd make an appearance (checking his IMDB page regularly).

reply

ARGH!

I knew Gil wasn't in the second series, but thought I'd give it a go anyway... but I just don't think it's working.

One of the things I loved about the first series was that the focus switched between Alice and Gil regularly, but now that we're focussed on Alice all the time I keep waiting to see what Gil's doing! It's like we're only getting half an episode a week (Alice's half).

Removing Gil has (for me) actually taken the point out of the whole thing. Anyone else feel the same?

I do still like the programme, but I agree - I thought the whole point of the series was that Alice and Gil were made for each other but never knew it (that last scene of them both at the theatre not laughing was amazing). It's missing something without that main plot thread and making Sheridan Smith and Montserrat Lombard into more central characters hasn't really interested me.

In a way, I'm glad at least Gil got mentioned and it was an ending to the episode that I totally didn't see coming. I suppose we never actually heard the words 'He's Dead' so there is still hope?! That's if there is even another series, as I'm pretty sure he's not in this one - it was filmed ages ago.

reply

It is certainly not the same without the two intersecting stories. THey seem to have just dumped Gil due to Landes' unavailability, but without knowing how to resolve the character.

It seems the show is trying to move on, and introduce Heap's character, without fully thinking of how to 'dump' Gil.

I am hoping that Renwick will find a way of re-introducing him next series if there is a third series.

In the meantime, I hope Gil is mentioned in the next episode, and not just simply forgotten about.

Oh great. Gil got mentioned this week just for us to hear that he died of a heart attack! Not exactly what I was hoping for.

I'm enjoying the programme, but I almost wish they had just kept this as a completely separate entity from the first series.

reply

Indeed. That's that then. I must say, Renwick really has *beep* up with this one.

When I heard that ('last date died of a heart-attack') I cursed the screen. They could have left it open ended. What a dis-service to the character of Gil and the appeal of Michael Landes.
